Radar Detector Mounting

Does anyone know where to place suction cup mounts for a radar detector on this thing? I got a new Escort Passport 85 and I haven't got a place to keep the mount. Don't know if there's a professional mount kit for it yet. Oh, I did get a Phone Kit professionally installed in this puppy, kicks ass!!! Thought about using part of the mount for the detector.

My valentine One is so heavy, the suctions can not hold it for more than few minutes. Worse the windshield is so cold that the suction cups wont be effective at all after a while. Nicks are everywhere on my console so I am afraid to use my V1 in winter.

I just put it 2" below my rearview mirror.

Check out the photos to see how I mounted my V1.
They are on the last page of the links below.

Thanx dude... You got your ride hooked up... It's my first time using a radar detector so I had no clue on the best spot to suction -cup it to the windshield... Word on the Valentine 1 radar.. Before getting the Escort Passport 8500 I did research for 2 weeks on the best Radar Detector.. (http://www.radartest.com) The V-1 (List $400) fell short behind the BEL 980 2nd (list $230), and Passport 8500 1st (List $300)... What's worst, is that a $1400 unit was dead last (4th)... The Passport is way better looking too.. (http://www.escortradar.com)

PS: Shawn S, does your audio add ons cause the bass to drown out the vocals and everything rattle tho?

That review is very suspect and I have read several places that it was paid for by certain companies that surprisingly did very well in the test.
It’s just one bad review that hardly offsets the many good ones and thousands of satisfied users.
Go back and read some of the heated discussions on this topic that I have been involved in both here and acura-tl.com.

It doesn’t drown out the vocals too bad, but YES it shakes the HELL out of the entire ASS end of the car.

Yeah, we read those sites too and I think most of us agreed that the radartest sites were just a little bias. Some people, suchas kensteele. So let us know how your experiences go..

I believed radartest.com for awhile, until I saw it for my own eyes:

Mine has been hanging there since June of last year and it only came loose once.
Only one “cup” let go, so it didn’t come crashing down.

Make sure both the windshield and the inside surface of the “cups” are perfectly clean.
Don’t straddle the windshield tint “dots” with one of the cups.
Mine has one cup on the dots and one on the bare glass.
This gives it a solid surface to hang on better.

My V1's been up since I put it there in September + passengers bang it every once in awhile with the sun visor. I don't think it's going anywhere.

For what? There are no effective traffic applications for a laser defuser; whatever the hell a laser defuser is.

I had trouble with mine on the windshield two times. First time was because one of the cups was on the dimples (next to the mirror), and the second time was the first freezing weather. Stay off of the dimples and make sure everything is squeaky clean.

The best way I found to prevent it from falling is to leave the mount on the windshield and remove the detector from the mount. A little harder to put back on but it was always falling off once the weather got cold. It hasn't since doing it this way.

Joey, if you did research for 2 weeks on detectors, no way would have chosen anything but the V1. It sounds like you settled on this one review for some reason. Check out Car and Drive's archives for some good reading.

www.speedzones.com seems to have the most unbiased tests.

BTW I just bought 4 suctioncups from the V1 web site. I got a call from them and they told me the order was delayed because I was not in their database as an owner. I told them I had bought 2 used units. Gave them the original owners' name and they sent me the suction cups. I know this policy can't keep your V1 from getting stolen but at least the $umbitche$ can't get parts or repairs when they need it.

___Damn dude, you're probably right.. I have no real incentive for getting the Passport 8500.. I have NEVER used a radar detector in my life before and this research was strictly unbiased in my part. I was so close to buying the V1 cuz money was not the issue for me, but it was minor stuff like size, muting, etc.. that appealed to me. I was concerned about the V1 doing %20 better then the passport, but appearantly it hadn't. I saw a couple guys do side by side with the V1 and there were trade-off features between the 2 units.. Besides I've only had this Passport for 2 days and can still return it.. I even considered buying that $1400 unit, but it scored at 44 (out of 100) or something on the RadarTest.com site.
____I'm just concerned about getting One-Time on my ass on these Chicago roads. But why haven't you guys gotten the in-dash kit for the V1? That thing is so damn big to hang from your windshield.. The Escort is much smaller and the rearview and visors still get in the way. And being in Chicago you know the freaggin' freezing temperatures don't joke.. Anyone ever considered placing it on their dasboards using velcro or something?

I put mine up by the mirror and don't even see it anymore. The concealed display is to the right of the steering column making it easy to read the display. To me, it didn't matter how big or heavy the detector was, I was just concerned about performance and features. I know I got the best of both.

Also, at the time I purchased it, it was the only detector that could be upgraded, meaning you didn't have to buy a new one when new radar technology came out. If money's no object go with the V1. If it was, maybe find one of the older Bells Kensteele always talks about. They sound descent but those would be my only choices.

I had my Passport suction cups on my windshield for at least 10 years. That's 10 years in Minnesota, were the cold makes a Chicago winter seem like North Florida.

Only a few times a year does the suction cups not adhere to the windshield because it was too cold. If you mount the suction cups and leave them be for several months, they will not come off when the weather turns cold. At least mine didn't.

But that Velco? I won't last thru not even one [hot] Chicago summer.

Nashua...........your unit shouldn't be falling off. Mine has held since Christmas and the only thing I don't like about the V-1 is the "manual mute"....kind of a pain. I prefer an auto-mute button so I don't have to reach up every time I pass a shopping mall. Clean the windshield, moisten the cups lightly, and stay off the dots.
