The fact that this car is a sleeper is what draws me to the car the most

Hate to burst your bubble but I doubt if it was a Trans Am. The TA has the LS1, 5.7l engine that puts out 310hp and 340 pounds of torque.
The Firebird is a 3.8l, 200hp machine though.
Bet it was fun smoking them though!!

Yeah, my friend has a '98 Camaro Z28. He's done a lot of mods to it and it dynos around 400HP!!

Needless to say I won't be trying to race him.

BTW, the '00 Trans Am Conv is 0-60 in around 5.5 sec with manual tranny. I believe my friend's Camaro does it in the mid to high 4s. And it is an automatic!!!

Smoked a 5.7Liter V8? I don't think so... You could have had him on the turns, nut he would have whooped you in the straight. Maybe it was the V6 Firebird.

That's the problem with racing those type of cars. It could be one of a dozen types. Since I was never into the TA/Camero types, I have no idea what I beat the other day. All I know is the engine sounded 8-cyl, it was a manual, and the driver was shocked.

Kensteele:

I know what you mean. I ran with one out on 66E one nite going into the city. I know it had to have been an 8 cylinder, because of the dual exhaust. Generally I can tell if its a V6 or not by looking at the number of pipes. 4 indicates a v8, and 1 is a 6.

Incorrect, you can get a 3800 V6 equiped Firebird with a dual exhaust. Secondly, equiping it with different mufflers such as Flowmasters (2 or 3 Chambered) will result in a deep sound that could be mistaken to be a V8 by many.

It is possible guys, dont be so quick to shoot down his story. My good friend has a '98 Z28 hartop auto, and they have 305hp stock. He has flowmasters and i think an air filter, we've run numerous times, and I consistently loose by less than half a car length.
If that T/A was a covertible auto and 2 guys were in the car, he may have been able to beat him, but it would be damn close nevertheless.

There is no way any current Acura CL could beat a moderately new T/A...I just sold my '97 T/A about 1.5 years back and that car was a beast. It did have the 5.7L engine with 325 ft/lbs of torque...and the newer models now have even more. I believe the top of the line T/A now has 320 hp and some incredible amount of torque. On the other hand, the T/A was an utter disgrace when it came to fit and finish...which is why I am now driving a '99 CL.

It's possible if it had a manual and the guy had no idea how to drive. Otherwise it's impossible! '00 Trans Am conv. is 0-60 in around 5.5 seconds. A stock '98 Camaro Z28 with automatic is 0-60 in the low 5s.

Just checked out carsdirect.com, and they show the firebird available as a convertible with V6 and dual outlet exhaust pipes as an option.

For those not familiar with www.autosite.com I highly recommend it if you are curious about tech data and performance data for cars. You just go to the new car area and select the model and for most models there is a "Performance" link where they give you 0-60, 1/4 mile, 60-0, skidpad and so on for multiple model years of that particular vehicle. The performance data is from all the major magazines.

Cool, thanks for the links. How come they skipped the 98 model? Same as the 97 or 99? Sigh, anyways, nice links.

I guess what we are saying is that it's hard to know what you beat. If it was a V6 firebird then it is nothing to write home about.

If it was truly a Trans Am then that means the driver had no idea how to drive because that car can smoke a CL-S. And again, no reason to write home.
