raced an Rx8...

So i went out a little while ago to pick up all the fluids i will need to install the supercharger (which im hopefully doing tomm.) ...at the store (advanced auto) some guy was gauking at the Ack as i walked inside the store. on my way out he sped off in a black m/t Rx8.. me being the mature teen that i am was wondering what exactly he was stairing at.. so i pulled out following him down the road. As i came up to the side of him i heard his car revving verry high as he was obviously in a low gear so that he could quickly pull away from me as i aproched his side.. i down shift to 2nd in s/s at around 30 mph and wait for him to go.. he then takes off as i do the same and we stayed with eachother untill the red light.. "lucky us a red light" at the change of the light we took off and as soon as he shifted from 1st to 2nd i was gone 1 whole cars length in front of him and i thought to myself... Rotary...can eat it.. lol anyways just wanted to share with my a-cl crew.

Good kill.

The more RX8 owners realize their cars are grossly underpowered, the better.

Mazda entirely missed the boat with this car. If it had a 300hp turbocharged engine, I might have considered it before buying my CLS-6, but since it doesn't, the thought didn't even cross my mind.

i raced a fully modded rx8 and i only have an intake and we were neck and neck, i asked him what he had done and he said everything short of a turbo, it was pretty loud for an rx8 and ive driven the 8 as well, so yea, considering im almost stock and had him by half a car... it was a nice race tho

we all know these cars are slow. is there any way to get them to be respectable. i mean, there is a huge tuner market surrounding the nissan fm platform, we got some support from comptech and various others, but i never hear of an rx8 getting a turbo or any significant power adder. are the rx8's not as mod friendly as the rx7, or does it just need a little time?

Tons of 8s are turbo'd. Thats the only way for them to become decent performers. Hell, there is even a 20B(Triple Rotor engine from a cosomo) Twin turbo RX-8(900 hp) running around Jersey.

The only fast rotary engines are boosted, otherwise they just don't have the power to get going.

Hopefully. Mazda did a prototype RX-8 with a SC. No word on whether we'll see it in the States.

It's true that the RX-8 is not the same car as the previous RX-7. The RX-7 was a fairly uncompromising performance car in its last generation. The rotary engine itself was reliable but they had some issues with turbocharger reliability.

Rotary tuners have been having trouble getting more power out of the RX-8 for any extended period of time. From what I've read on the various forums, there is no aftermarket replacement ECU - only pigyback units that ride on top of the ECU - and the stock ECU tends to fight the piggyback units. Haven't tried it myself, but it's what others say they've experienced.

I have a CL-S 6 speed and an RX-8, both bone stock. There's not much difference in off-the-line performance. Both high 5s 0-60, low-mid 14s in the quarter.

As those of you who've modded your CLs know, the CL responds very well to mods. So it's not surprising that a modded CL would be noticably quicker that a modded RX-8, since it's not nearly as easy to get power from RX-8 mods.

Once somebody comes up with an ECU replacement for the RX-8, all of that could go out the window.

The earlier comment about RX-8 handling is dead on. The motor's so small that they mounted it behind the front axle. They moved the gas tank in front of the rear axle. They got nearly a 50/50 weight distribution. Plus, its RWD. The handling is spectacular.

Some of you guys are being WAY too hard on the RX-8 - I mean, c'mon, you gotta respect 238 HP from an engine that one person can lift...

I love my CL - don't get me wrong - but when it comes to having fun in the twisties, it ain't even close. RX-8 all the way.

rx-8 is great in the twisties, but so is an s2000. doesn't the rx-8 cost more? or are they about the same? in any way s2000 > rx8

no offense but a chick i know drives an rx-8, personally i think it looks retarded from some angles. 3rd gen RX-7 is one of my favorite cars, ever. i knew a dude with an FC, it was one hell of a beast.

MSRP on a 2005 RX-8 is $26,875. MSRP on a 2005 S2000 is $33,150. I think the S2000 comes fully loaded. The RX-8, loaded, is probably around $30K.

S2000 lacks the rear seats and rear doors of the RX-8. I got the CL over the S2000 because I needed back seats, same with the RX-8.

Looks are always a matter of preference. I love the looks of the RX-8, and I always thought the S2000 looked a little bland. To each their own, though - if I had another $33K in my pocket I'd still love to have an S2000.
