torque braking is when you hold the brake in and apply the accelerator pedal to raise the revs without moving the car. You then release the brake pedal and get a stronger launch. Really bad for the stock transmission.

Gate shifting is using the shifter to manually shifting gears through the gate

1->2->3->4->5

i've found that on my car, launching off idle works better than torque braking. the difference was a 2.2 60ft off idle and a 2.3 60ft from loading up the converter.

idle has got to be better as far as getting traction down. i feel that though you are at higher revolutions while torque braking, it isn't much of an advantage since it is harder to apply the proper accelerator pressure as to not lose traction compared to an idle launch.

idle launch w/VSA off > torque brake launch period.

Gate shifting will keep you in Vtec from the 1st to 2nd shift but it's difficult to master perfectly.

When using the SEQUINTIAL SPORT SHIFT (SS) mode, your car will shift from second to first automatically when you slam on the gas. I'm not exactly sure about when you just slam on the gas in first. There may be something with the electronic shifting that prevents it, but I do know for a fact that it does allow you to go from second back to first. I was manually (no SS) going through the gears last week racing some ricey kid and when I went from second to third it actually hit the rev limiter (for about 3 seconds) after I had already manually shifted it to third, so that isn't always the best I guess. Although, I have never had that problem before and I only have 5K on this tranny. I also never have that problem with any other gears.

Brake torquing will hurt your transmission, not gate shifting.

Ok...
On my way back from the gym today, I remembered this post. In SS mode, I was stopped at a red light and after rolling a little (I need new tires, they are bald) for traction, I slammed on the gas and First gear went up to 30 mph before shifting into second. That is pretty good for an automatic tranny. I don't think your statment about First to Second shift in SS was correct. Granted it didn't go to the redline, but it still got to thirty and I couldn't really feel any shifting into Second.

SS is not gate shifting. Gate shifting is just that... shifting thru the gate.

It's the only way to control the 1st to 2nd shift manually.

I know that, I was talking about the SS because of his comment. My other comment about reving out when I was shifting manually was gate shifting...
