Quick question...

Sorry but i tried searching but i didnt find what i was looking for... im just wondering on what the sequence is to find out trouble codes. My engine light came on today for the first time and was wondering if the codes could tell me something. Shes an 03 CLSMT with 186'000km on it and again this is the first time the light ever came on. I had the maintenance light come on before, but i thought that was for my oil changes seeing that it was usually coming on close to the oil change date. Also, i know my air filter is pretty dirty, so im thinking that it may be due to this.

Any thoughts or suggestions? Links to the right post of how to diag myself would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for being such a n00b.

Thanks guys.

First you need an OBD-II code reader/scanner like this one . It plugs into your OBD-II port (located under your ash tray in the middle console behind a little plastic plate). The trouble code the reader gives you will tell you whats wrong with your car.

Ahhh thanks... i was under the impression that we could see trouble codes via radio after some sort of check list being completed. Like finding out the radio code. Seeing that i dont have one of these, i guess ill take her in and see what its about. In the meantime, is there some things that i can do? Change spark plugs (havent been changed after 86'000 km)? Change air filter? Could it be the o2 sensor? My car passed the emissions test with flying colours the other day... so i dunno, is that worth it or should i just leave it be and take her in?

Actually in the 6 speed CLS, the OBDII is under the dash. If you guys have Autozone up there, you can go there and they will read your code for free.

Thanks for the heads up!!
Weird, exactly 24hrs later the light goes off. Probably warning me that something needs to be changed?!

THanks for the suggestions!

Nope. It only lights if something is wrong. You have no way of knowing what the problem was without scanning for the code. A code scanner is under $70. You should invest in 1. Remember it's good for any OBD2 car.
