Nope. Its not. The CLS is rated for 5w20 oil. They may be saying 5w30 due to the tempture up there.

You can use regular 5w20 or Mobil 1 5/20. Regular will be less, but the mobil one will be better for your engine and you can run it allot longer.

The new Mobil 1 you can run safely to 15k! I only run mine to about 8-9k. I just actually checked it the other day. We are at 8.5k and the oil looks good.

It's ok to use 5w30.

As for a battery, I have a Yellow Optima size 34/78

There was a thread similar to this before. The 01 CL's are recommended by Honda to use 5W30 and 02's and 03's are 5W20. Its in the service manual. I would use 5W20 but with a synthetic. Synthetic helps with the cold starts.

i used 5w30 forever, no issues. As for battery, head down to crappy tire and pick a decent one for half of what the stealership wants.

Freezing temps would demand a thinner oil instead of a thicker one. That being said, the 5W-20 and the 5W-30 oils are practically the same. I believe I read the only reason the spec was changed was to conform to some government standards or something. Given the freezing temps up there, I would try to find the 5W-20 if you can but it won't necessarily hurt anything to use 5W-30.

It won't hurt to run that oil for a while.

As to the 5-20 vs 5-30 debate, Honda (and Acura of course) changed the recommended oil as a partial way to meet the last round of fuel economy standards as in 5-20 gives ever so slightly less resistance to moving parts. There was absolutely no change in the engine internals. By the way, Ford did the same thing at the same time for the same reason.

BINGO,, what he said,, oil vis change was for EPA numbers only,,

Now if you just use 0w30 Amsoil with a Amsoil filter you'll be good for one year or well over 10k miles. Amsoil 0w30 has been made to exceed all 5w20 requirements. I do this after I had my oil analysed,, it works great,,

It's hard to get past the fear of unknown,, just read more oil stuff on the internet.

A good place to start www.bobistheoilguy.com

Even though everything is built to spec, each engine is its own entity and has its own characteristics. I usually use 5w 20 but i will venture and try other things to see what my lil guy likes best. Next ill try the 0w30 Amsoil stuff seeing that so many have said fantastic things about it.
