Questions for the experienced

Hello,

I'm pretty new to this site, but I believe that every one loves their CLS just as much as I do, so I'm very excited!!

It is nice to know that there are so many people who mods their CLS, and since mine is basically bone stock, I would like to get some info from those of you who have done great things to yours.

Here are my questions:

1. I looking into getting some 19"s, I think most likely to the RH C5 EVOs. But I'm concerned about my ride quality. What is the biggest/thickest tire I can have on them without changing the actual total size of the wheel/tire.

2. If I could get bigger tires which results in enlarging my total wheel/tire size, what are the implications if I do? (The store wants me to get 35 series, but I think 40's will work, and I have seen them on other cars before. They say I could screw up my Tranny very fast.)

3. Springs. I have seen Comptech, H&R, and others. If I have ride quality in mind, and I want to moderately drop my car for handling, what is the best spring, and dropped by how much?

I know that there are a lot of people with different kind of springs, and some even have one kind for the front, and another for the rear. I would like you guy's opinions before I go and dump money into it.

All of your help is greatly appreciated!!

1 + 2) If the offset is 49 or greater, then they should fit fine...if they are 19x8...otherwise, you will have to roll the fender. 40s would be better but they might cause rubbing....225/35/19s really are ideal. Make sure you take the car back to have the ABS and VSA recalibrated.
3) If you are going to lower it....get a small drop of 1" as your 19s will fill up your wheelwell...also, if ride is an issue...make sure you get Koni Yellows....

Hey, welcome to the board.

If your going for springs on your ride, I'd either suggest the Comptech + Koni combo or the bit pricecier TEIN coilover combo. The Comptech's drop is slight and will provide more room for clearance of your bigger tires. The TEIN coilover would also be good as it's only marginally more tha springs+new shocks anyhow and can at least be adjusted unlike the Apex'i.

I have the TEIN coilovers and i love them. They ride just like stock. I wouldn't suggest going with 19's, but that's my opinion. If u gonna drop it with springs, it give u a harder ride. and then ur gonna drasticly change the size of ur rims. Ask someone who has it done to theirs. Some who knows from experience. Good luck and let us know what ur gonna do.

Here are my options

Thanks for all the informative replies. I took everyone's suggestions, and did some research on the net, and at the local performance shop. I would like some inputs for the following:

1. Koni Yellows with H&R Race Spring. front 2.2 / rear 1.75

Online: $1127 w/o labor
Local shop: $900 installed

2. Tokio Illumina adjustiable with H&R Race Spring

Online: $905 w/o labor
Local shop: $750 installed

The reason why I have H&R springs for both of them is because the local shop is a perfer carrier for H&R, so they can get a better price. Plus, I see lots of people with the H&Rs on this board, so I'm sure is should be okay. My main concern is the shock and struts. I want to make sure that the one I choose is nice and quite, and can ride as close to stock as possibile.

Thanks for all your inputs!!

I have 19"s with + 45 offset, 235/35/19, and I have had NO rubbing, and I didn't have to roll me fenders.

Do they even make a 235/35R-19 wheel size? That's oddly proportioned.

that's what we're saying.. if your gonna spend 1000 dollars on a Spring+Shock setup you may as wll go the route of a true coilover.

Have to remember that the H&R + shock combo you're still putitng two things that weren't designed for each other. At least when getting a coilover setup, the shocks and springs are desgined with each other in mind. Plus, U can adjust the ride height and not be limited to a spring

Comparing stock CL-S tires at 215/50/17 and 19's with a 235/35/19, the wheels RPMs at 75mph are 990 for the stock, and 989 for the 19's. The outside diameter is nearly identical.

a 235/35/19 will have a decent size sidewall, and will ride pretty close to stock. As far as spings go, for the price of Koni's and H&R's you could just buy a set to Tien coilovers. With those you'll have the option to set the ride quality wherever you'd like, along with the ride height.

Or the Nex coilovers, which are actually slightly cheaper than the TEINs and offer at LEAST as much adjustability at the TEINS.
