questions bout 6 speed shifting

When u go up a gear......theres a rev limiter to prevent the engine redlining all the way.......BUT when u down shift from lets say 4rth to 3rd gear there is no such protection. No the question is....wat can go wrong with the engine or tranny if u redline it while going down a gear??

you can blow an engine by over reving it. The valves start to float then they hit the top of the cylinder and blam

I almost did it once, shortly after I got the car, going 3-2 instead of 3-4, but caught myself first. I hadn't let the clutch out yet, and the revs never got past 4k, but it was a bit scary. I think a couple other folks on the board have mentioned similar "near-miss" situations.

Haze, you did not happen to down shift from 5th to 2nd or something like that?

Yeah, the "near-misses" are scary. I did it a few times when I was getting used to driving the car. As long as you catch yourself before letting the clutch up your ok, but it does make for an interesting moment.

I shift from 5th (or 6th) to 3rd sometimes, but I kinda hesitate and let the shifter sit in the neutral gate for a split sec before dropping it into 3rd. I'm scared that I'll miss 3rd and hit 1st accidently

Re: questions bout 6 speed shifting

The only downshifting problem I've observed is from 6th to 5th. If you're sloppy, you can end up in 3rd. It's always a good idea to keep an ear open for the revs climbing too fast or car lunging when downshifting. If you're alert, you can always quickly depress the clutch to save your engine.

You can get what happend to my car I think. I didn't do it though. I blame the dealer for having it driven to my dealer on a dealer trade, had 50 mile son it when I got it. See this post...

Isn't there a mechanism that blocks going to first gear above a certain speed? Similar to the one that stops you from going into reverse if you're not stopped? I think those are the only 2 gears that are blocked if you're moving forward.

bent vlaves are a must in any misshift. i have done it while driving, not a fun thing. as far as i know all honda products(yes that includes Acura's) have a spring mechanism that blocks off firts gear for an easy downshift. if held against the spring it will give way and you will be able to downshift into first. and yes there will be resistance so its very hard to downshift into first.

Oh shit.. Can someone tell me the max speed of 4th gear. I've gone from 5th to 4th (should have been 6th) twice now.

I felt the drag as soon as I started letting out a partial clutch. I immediately sank the clutch and put it in 6th. I figure I was going 75/80 in 4th when this happened.

in fourth you would be able to go atleast 110 or so.
