Question regarding swapping exhaust

Hey...

I need to swap out my exhaust on 01 cls. Is this something I can do myself in the driveway? What all would I need... jacks and air tools? Its just axle back, just the mufflers, everything should be bolt on right?

Can anyone forsee any problems I might run into?

Thanks...

if its only the mufflers you don't even need air tools or even a jack. just a ratchet and i forget which size socket, but it's either a 10,12 or 14 mm and some WD-40 for the hangers

a jack will make it a bit easier, but it's not needed

thanks for the info... thats great.

question #2... what happens if you try to drive the car without mufflers?

my situation is that I need to remove my stock mufflers, then a few days later have aftermarkets installed. the aftermarkets need to be welded... can I drive my car 1/4 mile to a shop without mufflers or do I need to get it towed?

you can drive it just fine w/o mufflers. it may sound raspy as hell but it won't hurt a thing.

Try this! Turn on the car at home and rev the car at about 1500 to2000 RPM and listen to exhaust sound. This should help determine if it going to be to loud.

I just need to get it to a shop, it would be driven less than a mile. As long as its not going to damage anything, I can deal with the sound for a minute or two.

^^ what I was going to say ^^

The biggest thing to be concerned about is being caught by a grumpy officer who thinks you're starting a rice fest. Most states have significant laws concerning emissions and the exhaust system, and driving city streets without mufflers is a no-no.

I can't imagine the muffler shop charging more than $20 to pull off the old ones since they are going to get the business of installing new ones. Just have them do it.

I'm swapping my mufflers with a guy in Alabama (karussell)... I need to take mine off and ship them to him, then he is shipping his to me... if I have the shop take mine off they want $25/day to store my car until the new set gets here. I'd rather take them off at home and keep my car in the driveway, then drive it over to the shop.

My exhaust was a PITA. All the bolts were seized. They definitely couldn't be taken off without air tools. I soaked them in WD 40 for an hour and no dice.

my car has been in the desert since it was shipped here...no salt, dirt, grime, water.... hopefully that means the bolts should come off easily.

if not.. heat them up..

and I used to love driving around with open exhaust ..sounds horrible on our cars, but something about flipping a switch at a red light and warming up the tires...ewweee, makes me all warm in side..

You should be fine Beet. I popped mine out without even jacking up the car. 14mm if I recall and just use a breaker bar or cheater pipe if they're tight. I use silicone spray on the exhaust hangers to make things slide better. The B-pipe after the cat has a resonator in it so it'll take some of the sting out of the exhaust. If you're only going a mile, just keep the rpm down as low as you can. If you get pulled over, a good story would be that you're exhaust got stolen and you're taking it to a muffler shop to get repaired

f$%ckin A!

i just found out my residency petition at ASU got denied because my car is still registered in Virginia.

to switch the registration on the car means I have to go through about 20 different hassles. change my title, refinance my loan, etc etc. f that.

cls is going bye bye. I'm going to sell it and get a legacy gt by the fall.

this means I am not doing the exhaust swap anymore.... someone should jump on this deal...
