Question about using SS

Ok...so this is my first car with SS and I HARDLY use it yet because I'm new to it. I hardly even know how to drive stick (however I can if I needed to get somewhere, I just don't do it all that wondefully). So you see my situation here...I'm an SS newbie ...

So, how do I use this shit CORRECTLY? Say I were to about to race somebody on the street and I'm using SS and I'm in 4th gear cruising at 40. Now, I'm assuming I'd want to downshift into 2nd gear, right? Now in the process of about to race, do I downshift FIRST.....THEN staart to floor it? Or can I floor it and then downshift? What's the best method, and what's best for the tranny itself?

Also, when slowing to a red light, is it best to downshift from 4th, to 3rd, to 2nd, the to 1st? Or from 4th to 3rd...and then get to the stop, letting the tranny shift itself into 1st once you're slow enough? I try not to do any 3-2 shifts if possible. If you guys got any other tips or suggestions on shifting, at what rpms, what gear etc, hook me up

Computer can do all the downshifting for you as you slow down. Just let it do its job.

If you're cruising at 40 in 4th and want to race someone, just tap the shifter down twice, and put it in 2nd. Pace the opponent, then floor it. Computer will automatically downshift to 1st if necessary and possible.

ok, so downshift first, then floor it?

also, is it cool if I'm like flooring it and I downshift it, say into 4th from 5th on the highway, rather than shifting first, then flooring it?

yes u can do it either way, shift then floor this will cause some lurching tho, floor it then shift, or even at the same time, doesnt really matter. but when u race, ud rather downshift first, the revs should be up ~4-5k right in vtec range, then floor when ur ready to race. u wanna already be in the right gear before u start racing or ull only be wastin time and the race will be over before it even started

As a rule down shift first, then floor it... remember in SS you need to upshift at redline.

Not quite accurate... the SS will let you down shift a gear or in D5 it may just unlock the torque converter and keep the same gear. This is speciall tru in the 5th or 4th gear!!

I don't see the point using SS on a straight line race.

I've started to use SS in straight line races and i could swear it feels faster then just putting it in D4 and mashing the pedal. I take the gears as far to redline as possible and then shift without hitting the rev limiter.

Also i use SS when cruising in 5th to downshift to 3rd and then take off.

Does the tranny shift manually in D3,4,5 mode rather than using the computer in SS mode?

You're still sending control signals to the shift solenoids via a multiposition switch when using D3, 4, 5 modes.

Both "route" signals through the computer, but the "logic" is a bit different.

SS --> Computer -> Solenoids (The On and Off state of the solenoids determines which gear to use for SS and Dx)

D1, D2, etc -> Computer -> Solenoids
