question about tire specs and offsets

I have another question for you guys/gals. What does the tires specs mean? For example, 225/40/18 or 235/40/18 or 215/35/18. What do those numbers mean? How do I know which ones fit our car.
My next question is about offsets. I hear you guys/gals talking about offsets. What does it mean? What settings would fit our car?
If I'm thinking of getting comptech springs with koni shocks and lowering it about .5-1 inch and getting 18" rims, would it work? I don't want the tires rubbing. I will appreciate any help.
BTW, any recommendations on rims? I'm thinking of getting Alstadt I, Brabus Monoblock V (yes, I know they're for MB, but they're nice), or Hartge Classic. I'm looking for rims that would represent the Cl-S, classy and sporty. Thanks for your inputs.

Thanks for the link! Our Tl brothers have an awesome site. I like the FAQ page. We should have something like that (if we already don't). Thanks again.
