Question about Tiptronix

Guys had a question for ya: Say if you are in bumper to bumper traffic on the highway, you go up to like 20 mph then break, i was thinking it would it save more gas if you shifted to tiptronix or if you just kept it at D5.

What are you thinking of doing? Keeping it in gear longer? If so wouldn't that use up more gas cause you'll end up going to the higher RPMs? I don't own a CL but I live in traffic, and the best mpg's i've gotten in traffic was with a manual (staying in neutral letting good ol inertia do it's work), i've done gateshifting to stay in a gear longer but it slows the car down too much so you'd have to stay on the gas. just my

I think u save gas in SS mode if u shift shift early because in auto mode, it doesnt shift into 5th gear unless it is 45mph, while 5th gear is available at 35mph in SS mode.

do u mean downshift so that your car slows down faster? i doubt that save gas cuz once u downshift the rpm's are higher. If u put your car in neutral and pressed the breaks, i think u'd save more gas that way hahaha.

the only plausible way of savin gas is to shift early in the gears with the triptronic.... instead of shifting at 45... shift fifth gear at 40.... and with every oter gear other t han 1st and second...

/\ yea agreed the idea not to hold the car in gear longer, but shorter, u might save some gas that way.

for the record, it's Sport Shift in our cars...Tiptronic is a Porsche/Audi/VeeDub thing.

If you want to save gas use neutral and your brakes.

If I'm bumper to bumper not going higher than say 45 or something, I gate shift to fourth. That way the tech doesn't go higher than 3000 rpm and that's the fuel save mark. I have an 01 CL S auto.

I do not understand what you are saying. the tech will go up if u step harder on the pedal. putting it in D4 will just limit the gear to 4th one which i guess is to prevent your transmission from dying early by shifting back and forth between 5 and 4th.

The 4-5 shift isn't what's bad for our cars, it's the 2-3, so leaving it in D4 does no good. If I was going anything above 35 I'd have the car in 5th, especially if traffic wasn't movie much.

i us ss mode all the time to save gas, i shift i 2k everytime. 4th is anything over 20 and 5th is right at 35mph. Fill your tank up and see how many miles you can drive in ss mode shifting at 2k, big diff than auto.

I always use Sport Shift. Never knew it saved me gas tho. Thats a plus! I just like it cuz it kinda reminds of driving a MT. I miss driving a MT car. :-(

well i think i got some info from you guyz, im still new to the whole concept of sport shift, my previous cars never had them, what are recommended internvals for the times to shift gears, and how about downshifting, i've heard from 2 to 1, its better to use ur breaks , i dont want to mess up the transmission using SS, and thanks again for the input
