power steering problem

About a month ago I noticed that when I turn my steering wheel left or right (moving or not) the car makes a noise. And that noise continues like a whine when I drive and the pitch gets higher with higher rpm's. I checked my power steering fluid and the tank was full. Nothing felt wrong when turning the steering wheel whatsoever...it's just the noise.

I brought it to my mechanic and told him to flush the fluid and change the belt. When I picked up my car he told me "to us everything is fine" but I still hear the sound.

I could try replacing the pump but Im not sure if this is going to fix my problem. I noticed that the sound is louder from inside the cabin. If i roll down my window, stick my head out of the car and turn the wheel the sound is not as loud as if I were in my car.

I dont get it, its just annoying because this sound came out of no where and makes my car sound crappy

Does anyone have any ideas before I bring it back to the shop for more trial-and-error fixing?

I doubt it's steering related since it increases with RPM. How many miles you have? Could be your axle shafts, or the CV boots are torn.
It's normal for the steering to make some noise when your standing still & turning the wheel.

Im up to 79,000 miles. Im not the originally owner and I dont know the work that was previously done to the car. I know its normal to have some noise but this is obnoxiously noud.
It could be the axle shafts or boots, ill look into it. My left axle was making noise a year ago but after I but my pro-kit on the noise went away so I stopped worrying.

it is your comptech strut bar! Take it off! The bar is hitting/conducting the line for your power stearing fluid. Trust me, take it off, drive it and see if it still does it!

Bring your car over, maybe you don't need to take off the strut bar, lets check under the hood and make sure the hoses aren't crimped. I had the strut bar on and it wasn't noisier, but I did feel a difference in handling. maybe the car is so stiff that the flex it used to have is gone and it is transfering that rigidness to the steering.

Do you think if I do this I will notice an immediate change? If it is the strut bar, then it took a few days to a week or so to effect the power steering (in terms of making noise).

Before you do any removing, or replacing pumps, etc, lets try the hose thing, and see if that helps. I did notice that the hose had a little pressure, but maybe it needs some slack, lets try the cheapest possible fix first.

lol...i havent fixed that problem yet. The tone of my exhaust covers that noise right now. I changed the pump too but the noise is still there. My mechanic doesnt understand what could be the problem, only thing left is to take off the strut bar.

thanks for the move mods. so did you try to remove the bar or loosen it a bit? any one else with a ct strut bar notice this. the only way i can muffle the sound is to drive with the windows down and the radio @ half way i really don't want to take off the bar. any body with any suggestions?

I had the same (or at least a very similar) problem. Turned out to be the CV boot.

so some time this week i will remove the ct strut bar and see what happens. i'm afraid that the problem will go away. this would mean that i bought a ct bar for nothing hopefully someone can figure this out so that i can have the ct bar and not have these noises.

okay so i found some time and attempted to fix the problem. i loosened all the bolts w/o taking the bar off... problem solved!!! so i tighten one bolt at a time to see when and where the noise comes back. after a while of getting in and out of the cabin i found that the bolts that go on from the passenger windshield wiper is what causes. everytime i tighten the noise comes back. when i loosen the noise goes away. now that i figured this out i still can't figure out why the noise is there, where it's coming from, and how i can make it stop. anyone got some ideas for me?

I've also been getting a weird noise. like a squeeling/whining. going on vacation and getting some new rotors and pads in (brembo blanks and satisfied pro ceramics). Hopefully that'll solve it. my baby sounds like shit.

wow, I'm going thru the same thing with my Blower, trouble shooting it myself.

I would say, try some small washers that will allow the bar to be tightened and torqued down, but with adequate spacer to allow the noise to not return. what do you think?

i ended up using dynamat (sound deadening material) around all the contact points. i didn't like the rubber sponge idea so i tried to get creative and it seems to work. so far so good

so yah i tried to bring my car in to the dealer because my car is still making the humming noise when i have my wheel cranked. they couldnt find anything wrong with the car so they blamed it on having different tires on left and right, go figure. so its not the pump, fluid, or the strut bar (because i dont have the ct bar). i might look at my cv boots since someone else said it fixed their problem

You have different tires on the left & right front? That's not good.
