the S55 is a waste of cash. You should just buy the s500 save 50G's, cause your wasting it on 18" rims, new side skirts, and .3 1/10 of a second quicker to 60. just me $4.20

More like you can fit 10 rx's in an S55. Once you get sick of racing and mods you'll want the pimpin luxury of the Benz. I'll upgrade. =)

Hahahahahah Amir, that's a little biased.

Calling a Twin Turbo 20B Rx7 a "modded" Rx7...

that's like calling a CLK-GTR a CLK320 with some mods...

Shall I flood this place with cut and past Pro-Rx7 propoganda?

I would opt for the MB. Elegant, sophisticated, luxurious, yet sporty all at the same time. Not to mention that it's built like a tank and if maintained properly, will last forever.

I don't want to criticize the RX7...even though it is a great sports car, but the interior is kind of outdated and cheap-looking by today's standards. Also, if you plan on keeping the RX7 over a long period of time, expect to rebuild that rotary engine and replace the turbo. That's a fact of life.

are you nutz? the S55 runs low 14's and handles like shit compared to the m5 that runs high 12's. Come on man, 6 speed tranny, handling like it's on rails, the ability to drift like no other. You obviously think the S55 is alot faster and better all around equiped then it is

nope, not even in the same league. The S55 can be compared w/ the s500 and thats about it, they are identical cars in performance and appearance.

well, i love the S55, its such a pimp car and hopefully i will at one point be able to own a MB, but if its the S55 well, thats cool, but i would really love to have the c32 AMG casue man, that car is PIMPIN ON BLADs. if i cant have that, i want the slk55 or whatever that AMG is. but in a decision between the s55 and the rx-7, its the S55 all the way.

funny

this poll was done on off-topic.net

almost everyone said Rx7 and i got pretty mouthy with them..and they all told me why the Rx7 is better than an S55...

they all told me its only faster, but in 1000 different ways of wording it...

this was really interesting..

a board full of modd'ed cars like civics, integras, etc.. chose the Rx7..

while everyone on the cl board said s55

says a lot about taste, and how you can tell how SMART people really are, by just seeing what they drive.

I want to go FAST? RX-7 -no questions...

I want to PIMP? MB, no questions.

Both at the same time? hmmm.....M5!!! no questions.

So am I smart or what?!?

Its comparing apples to oranges. The S600 is $125000. The RX7 new is 38K. The RX with 10K in mods will run mid 12's and easily outhandle the MB. If you wouldn't choose a $125000 2001 model year car over a 38K car that came out in 1993 then there would be something seriously wrong with MB. The RX7's aren't nearly as unreliable as what people say. I've got 65K on moderate modded car with no problems. (try comparing that to 300GT, porshe or Vipers )People don't understand how to care for the rotory or they modify them incorrectly. (add boost but not fuel causes detonation) When you consider that about 90% of RX7 owners modify their cars, you can see how they got a reputation. I know somone with 135 K with no problemsw on a car he takes to the track on a frequent basis. SO IF TRULY LIKE SPORTS CARS AND YOU LIKE PERFORMANCE YOU GO FOR THE RX. IF YOU AN OLD FOGEY WHO JUST WANTS TO BE A POSER THEN GO FOR THE MB. Hey I'm happy people are even comparing my car to a brand new $125K car.
The RX is also the best looking car next to the 355 and 360

My oldman has a 00 S500 with the 18'inch sport package AMG's (come on the S55)- its a nice car, think the interior is a bit cheap (you have to get an S600 to get the extended leather/wood interior)....the S55 is cool, but its alot more money for 47 more hp than a standard 500....plus I would get the 2 door CL55, now thats a car...screw the 4 door- thats for people with kids (blah), an M5 is a nice choice for $70k like someone mentioned- saw an M3 convertible in my local BMW dealer MSRP+10k (73k, F that).

My buddy had a 93 RX7 R1 (yellow)- was a shit box.

Oh, quote "for old fogeys who want to be posers get the MB"- ok then, a $110k Poser car....I don't think so.

Considering the CL55 AMG is my dream car, I'd take the Mercedes over the Mazda anyway. I don't like tiny little cars.

I actually saw a S55 as it was passing me on my way to work on Tuesday. That car made me a little late to work because I had to follow him until I could catch him at a light and get a better look. At least I had a good reason to be late this time.

As I said, I have had the car 8 years an never in the shop. I got the hoses replaced with silicon hoses, never a problem. O-60 in low 4's. If you need a $125K to get a chick....I feel bad for you. If I was gonna spend that money on a car I'd get I 911 turbo or spend a little more and get a 360 or get a slightly used 355. Even though my RX is faster then both. If you friends RX was a POS, then then he didn't know how to take care of it. and yes your dad is a poser....or he is rich enough where he should have bought you a Ferrari. The only reason to buy a 125K everyday sedan which will be outdated in 2 years is because you have too much $ to know what to do with it....or you need to show off to your neighbors.

My Mazda racer buddy just called this weekend and is looking to add to his stable of "replacement" race engines. He is running his RX7 with about 400HP, so he tends to blow the seals a bunch. He does have a lot of fun for the money.

Do you have any good links to some salvage yards with 2nd and 3rd gen turbo motors in the California area (pref -- From Los Angeles to Mexican border)?

I also ran into a kid who heard of a guy in Gardena area that was a wizard with high performance rotary engine seals, and rebuilding for max reliability at high boost levels.

Would you mind sharing a link or three?

This is just about the most idiotically ambiguous query I've ever had the bad luck to run across.

I'm pretty sure that those who are choosing the S55 over the RX7 are trying to read the question as, "if someone were to give you either a S55 or RX7, which one would you keep to own?"

I might be going out on a limb, but the last I've heard is that only in La-La land will somebody give you a S55.

Those that chose the RX7 are obviously reading it as, "which one would you own, the S55 or the RX7?"

Even for the severely schizophrenic buyer (the only kind of buyer who would actually be agonizing between the S55 and the RX7), an little thing called value tends to to pop up every now and then. The S55 is just about the most overpriced vehicle for what it is nowadays. Even a completely clapped-out RX7 offers a better bang for your buck.

So let's get back to Amir's attempt at coming up w/a conclusions about your choices. The fact that those who chose the S55 were trying to read an ambiguous query in the most improbable light may just say "a lot about taste," and "how SMART people really are."

Wow, what an unbiased poll: three glory shots of some Benz and one tiny out-dated pic of an RX-7.

At one time I considered getting an RX-7. When ever single add I read said around 50K miles, new engine. WTF? Why would it need a new engine after 50K miles. Sounds like a POS to me. Considering I can get over 250 000 miles on the MB.

look it basically boils down to this. People who want luxury , class , and some performance buy the MB , people who are more worried about 0-60 times get the RX7. Personally I dont know why anyone would get the RX7 over an S55. It may be overpriced , and I agree It wouldnt be my choice if I had that cash to spend on a car. But between the two the MB would be in my driveaway anytime.

And although the RX7 looks good. I can think of plenty of cars that look better than it , M5, CL55, porsche, ferrari ( plenty of them ) and on and on. But to each there own

Oh, thats why Mercedez Benz, Jaguar, BMW, Rolls Royce/Bentley- Aston Martin (luxury brands) are all in business- so people can get "chicks."- thats good to know .

Don't start calling peoples family members names, thats a laim attempt at throwing cheap shots- its one thing calling your car a piece of crap.

Anyway, the RX-7 is crap- to makes things more fair, I would get a Supra TT over an RX-7 any day.

Best looking car next to a 355 or 360....ha ha, I wish I could say that about my Viper- but I'm not.

AMIRS....what do you think is a better looking car?
And if you don't know what you are doing and you do blow an engine at 60K you can pop in a rebuilt one for $3000 and your as good as new. Rotory's are cheap to rebuild because they usually just need new apex seals. Thats the same price as the MB's 60,000 mile routine maintenance.

How can you compare these two cars? The s55 is a totally different car than a rx7.

You must be on crack if you would choose a Mazda over a Mercedes s55.

Beltfed...I forget to put the GTS in the list of the best looking cars. Some say its a little bit over the top, but it certainly is a bad ass looking car. But when you are talking reliability... dude, you paid $80, 000 for a Chrysler. Everyone knows Chrysler has NEVER made a reliable vehichle. The make nice cars out of the box but they never hold up. I know, I own one.(5.9 Jeep) My Mom has owned 3 caravans (I don't know why) and two of them had the transmissions go at 100K and the other is not there yet. Jeep owners love their cars but everybody bitches about the reliability. The only thing my RX has been in for is a new radiator and radiator hoses. About $750. Thats pretty good for anycar that you own for 8 years let alone one that runs low 4's. I would bet a lot of $ that if you hold onto your GTS for that long you will spend a lot more money then I have for upkeep and it will be in the shop a whole lot more. (I'm not going to call your car a POS because thats what you expect when you buy a car built for max performance, not reliability) If you want reliability you buy an Acura Type S.
The Supra TT is the most reliable sports you can buy. Many years they were only available in slush box's and most people, including me, think they look like an overweight fish.(aka extremely ugly)

Absolutely, I would never call a Viper a piece of engineering art- its a kit car with a VIN number, the early GEN I cars were junk- the GEN II vehicles are much better (but not great)- still uncomfortable, still overheat easily, sills still heat up to dangerous temps....but you right, wacky sports cars are generally quirky in their own respects.

Actually, the Supra was available with a stick from 93-95, then 96 was auto only in the TT, then in 97 the 6spd came back, 98 was a weird year (only available in certain states) because of emissions....style, though it is personal preference like you said (I think the Supra looks "ehh" without the spoiler, same with the RX7)- both need it IMO.

I apologize for insulting your car....I get crazy on occasion .
