Perma-Plate? Worth the price?

Just got a brand new CL-S and my dealer is trying to talk me into getting Perma-Plate protection for $695. I'm just wondering if this is a scam or if it's really worth the money. Perma-Plate includes the following:

1. Rust-proof undercoat (guaranteed for 7 years)
2. Soundguard undercoat (supposed to reduce road noise)
3. Clear-coat protectant coating (guaranteed to protect paint for 7 years)
4. Leather protective coating (also guaranteed for 7 years)

Has anybody gotten this on the CL and is it worth the money? Does it really protect your car or is this just a scam that the dealer uses to increase profits? Thanks for the info.

If it protects against paint chips to the hood, it may be worth it. Our hood chips fairly easily and if you can get a new paint job (or at least touch ups) any time you get a chip, then it's worth it. Also take into consideration how difficult it is to collect what's yours under this 'guarantee'. Otherwise, SCAM!

Nothing protects against a pebble flung at 80 mph from a semi.

SCAM. My old man got that done to his TL and looks back and kinda laughs at the whole thing. "What a waste.".
I think though that if you wash regularly (at least once a week) and take good care of your paint with top notch products (Pinnacle, Zaino, etc.) you should be just fine. No need to blow 800+ on soem stuff that would be wisely spent elsewhere (wheels, kits, etc.).

ENJOY YOUR NEW CAR!!!!!!!!! :-)

Go to a well established detailer in your area. They will detail and give the similar scam but for only $250.00. That's about the price of a normal detailing.

You've got a point there, but if it could be fixed for free, then the question remains... "Are you going to get more than $695 worth of damamge from rocks flung at your hood fixed for free within 7 years?"

If the answer is yes, then it is worth it. Otherwise, it isn't.

I'd say you'd be better off getting the products mentioned above for the upkeep of your car's paint and also get a bottle of touch up paint and some langka (www.langka.com) and still have money left over for some sway bars.

Undercoatings are not only a scam, they are bad for the car. Undercoatings over time will loosen and create a pocket for water to collect. Over time this can rust out the car. Learn to do the maintenance to the paint and leather and it will last for a long time. My 91 Legend looked pristine when I sold it last month. Shiny paint and crack free leather.

Yeah..but if you look closely at the contract...it'll say something damage to paint, not the body, is not covered...that's the scam

Thanks guys for all of the information. I'm calling my dealer back and telling them thanks for trying to pry even more money out of my hands. I'm thoroughly unimpressed with Mike Hale Acura in Salt Lake City. If you live in Salt Lake City and need to buy an Acura, go to Jody Wilkinson Acura instead. They've gotta be better than Mike Hale.

In regards to the rock chip thing, I just got ClearBra installed (ClearBra and that guarantees no rock chips for 2 years. Paid a hefty price ($900), but it covers the full front bumper, front of hood, headlights and corners, and side view mirrors. The stuff is supposed to be better than 3M's competitive product.

It's basically a very expensive wax job. Years ago they used to call it "porcelanizing" and it was a scam. Today the manufacturers call it "Clearcoat". The dealer is trying to make a buck off you.

How's that ClearBra workin' out for you?! I've seen it quite a few times on a couple Lotus' here in town and a few of the other "highend" autos on fancy lots 'round here. It looks pretty slick. What color car do you have. I'd like to know how it would look on my Black. Any thoughts or people that have put the ClearBra on?!

The only real benefit is free repair of anything that was treated and damaged. I had it on my BMW, my sister spilled fruit punch all over the front carpeting, and it rolled all over the front floorwell and under the seat. I usually don't allow anyone to drink in my car even though it was capped, let my guard down and was pissed about it. Perma-Plate actually paid to replace the carpeting, which was around $2500. If you expect something like this to happen, it is worth it.

All those extras are where dealers make back anything they lost selling you the car cheap.

The ClearBra so far is working great. I've only had the car for a week so no real chance for rock chips. One thing I like about the ClearBra is that they actually guarantee that you won't get any chips for up to 2 years (unlimited miles). It's also a thicker material than the 3M material a lot of people on this board have been using. My car is silver and you don't even really notice the ClearBra unless you are standing right next to it. I'll post pics if I can borrow my friends digital camera.

The dealer I purchased my car from puts that crap on every car that goes out onto the lot. Therefore, they expect the customers to pay for it (it's really a way for the dealer to make more profit off the sale..IMHO). I refused to pay for it because I didn't want it in the first place, and I wasn't going to be forced to pay for something I didn't want. They didn't make a big deal about it, so I honestly wonder if it was really on the car. Hmmm.....

Even if by a small miracle it wasn't a scam, I couldn't stand the thought of that salesman high-fiving everybody after you walk out after you paid for that service.

It's abig scam. You can do it with Ziebart and you ge the same service for about $300. and they reapply it every year for a $40 fee every 12 mths. If you really want to do the under coating thing go to home Depot an by tar sealent. That is basically the rustproofing and sound barrier thing they put on the car.
