Are people scared of the CL-S ?

I know this sound stupid but today I had an incredible urge to race my car. I didn't car if I won or lost I just wanted to find out how well it faired against all these supposedly faster car. Now of course I didn't go racing in the residential streets or anything stupid like that.

I went specifically looking for the Maxima, Altimas, BMW 330 Ci, Infiniti G35 coupe, 350 Z. I know it sounds stupid but I want to see how well it does before the headers and intake get put on.

Needless to say everybody I lined up with young kids, grown men, even this cute blond in the older gen. Maxima either saw my taillights or backed off. I am really starting to think people are starting to respect the CL-S.

The only race I had doesn't count even tho I won cuz it was with a RSX-S. Can you believe he tried to pass me when I was doing 40 mph. I heard the Vtec screaming from his car and I was pulling on him till about 85-90 mph. Then at the light I thought he would wave to a fellow Acura owner for the good race. He was pissed off and his girl look scared Ha!Ha! Ha! sorry RSXers had to but the smack down.

actually, maybe it was a good thing that you didn't find any of those rides! because with skilled drivers behind the wheels of the aforementioned, you might get OWN3D so HARD, you'll pay rent! even if your cls has 3 pedals!

what about the WRX looks like a econo-box but fast as shit. Hey maybe our cars don't look like a Ferrari but it looks faster than most cars.

BMW's look very sport and all BMWs look the very simular from the 325 to the M3. Plus they are all pretty quick so people give bimmers respect. The WRX is a known speed demon to any 13yr old. Its a rally car common. Econo box? With those bug eyes and with every other WRX being Electronic blue. I don't think so.

I dont realy think people are scared of the car cause even though its almost 4 years old most people dont even know what the thing is, alot of times people have asked me what kind of car i have, the thing has no marketing, not alot of people drive them at all, and they just dont have a good road presence.

Re: Are people scared of the CL-S ?

haha only car i'd be afraid of is one that's about to run me over when I'm crossing the street. In a street race I really doubt fear ever enters into the picture at all unless you've got 'issues'...racing is just friendly competition, not like a fight or something...winning races doesn't make you a tough guy lol that's just rediculous. You might have watched F&F a few times too many.

I think of the CL as a stealth car. Conservative looks don't warrant much attention. I think the only real challenge I had was an SC430 which would've killed me except for that bus he almost rear-ended.
My old 328is was bright red, sport packaged, with a spoiler and chrome rims and I got challenged ALL THE TIME. It was annoying, especially because it had the POS 4 speed automatic and the car wasn't all that fast. I still managed to kill an IS300 and more than a handful of riced-out Integras.

Scared of the CLS? No. Scared of other cars that are slower?...depends. It's not necessarily the car I'm worried about...but more of the driver that's in it that raises my attention. Maybe I'm just being overly cautious...but whenever I run across someone that's driving aggressively, ESPECIALLY with dark tints, it definitely brings up a red flag in my mind, whether it be a faster car or not.

Not to sound like the voice of reason or anything...but have you done anything to your car to make it look conspicuous? I know I might get flamed for saying it...but any car that's proud enough to show Oakland Raider stickers in their rear window would be one of the last cars I'd ever want to mess around with. Get my drift?

You guys that say our cars are "slow" don't know the jack fuck you are talking about.

Most people on the road don't know jack shit about cars anyway. If they do, they only know about the quoted magazine speed figures...(like myself ).

To give respect where it is due, this CLS 6speed is a real sleeper. I guess (cause I don't have any) if you add I/H/E, man, it can't be THAT slow.

It will actually rape most cars out there. In fact, most average joe/moe out there won't "race" with ya...if you see more e$pensive cars, they are normally more conservative. I just like how this car can really perform when harassed to do so.

Now here is the sad part,...even 13 y/o kids say "man, that CLS is sloooow". I've heard that shit coming from some kids the other day walking home from school...dayam, no respect!

I think you're just looking in the wrong places for a street race. It's just not an urge or option for most sane law-abiding people.

i've had quite a few people see my car and want to race, they'll roll up next to me and slow down, eyeball me, and then attempt to pull away, but as of now, i've taken a 330i, RSX-S, TL-S, A4 and a few others, and my car is STOCK, the only thing about mine is the 6 speed that maybe they weren't betting on this car coming in.

who knows, maybe those people weren't experienced drivers, maybe they were automatics, or maybe the CL-S is better than we think they are.

I am guessing that anyone that knows anything about cars (generally the ones that might race you) also know that the CLS is NOT a slow car. Our car does LOOK slow since it is not generally seen with stupid unusable hood vents (WRX) or mile high spoilers. I agree with everyone that has said that our cars are sleepers and that is exactly the way I like it.

Same type of stuff (but the quite a few is "a few") and...

IF they hear the "boom" off the CAI, sometimes someone will come up to "play."

The advantage of having the car, IMO, is having most people ignore it (police included).

Drive up in a nice 911 and see how many people are glued to that thing. I've seen more times that "hot rodders" go chasing after a fast moving 911 and/or BMW (especially M5/M3). I noticed a M5 the other day on the freeway and it was picking up "would be contestants" like a magnet (that thing is ridiculous). It also picked up a nice CHP cruiser too. My dad used to run up from Orange County in his 911 and if he didn't keep the car to 5MPH over the limit, he would inevitably pickup a too-much-interest ticket (a constant rag about being picked on for driving a "fast looking car")

who knows, maybe those people weren't experienced drivers, maybe they were automatics, or maybe the CL-S is better than we think they are.
I sure have run into a number of people who had to ask what the car was.

And any car with similar numbers and RWD seems to get the jump off the line (RWD vs. FWD).

Other people modify their cars too -- and can have some nice stealth mods. And others put lame-ass tires (retread/station wagon 80K mile tires) and never bother to break-in and/or maintain their car. Not everyone in a "happening" car is an enthusiast...

A lot of variables...

I think its the Type-S badge...ever mine was taken/attempted steal, and i took it completely off, ive had more little ricers and domestics included try to run....it also helps to have an aftermarket exhaust, that way they think you've done some upgrades

not to say that you would do this, but since you mentioned it, if anyone put that on their car and if it wasn't a skyline, everyone's going to know that they are either a ricer, know abslutetly nothing about cars, or think the emblem will add 35 hp and 50 ft lbs of torque and shave 4 secs off their 1/4 mile

who cares?

The only thing that matters is if you like your ride.

Have you folks who are pissed that a new Altima (or whatever) can beat you in the 1/4 mile actually sat in an Altima and liked it? I'm selling my 2001 so I can get a car with a stick and let me tell you something ... it just plain sucks to sit in another car that is nearly the same price as the CL-S and see what I am going to lose as far as quality. The CL-S has one sweet cabin. (A 6-speed CL-S isn't an option due to money issues as I want to lower my monthly payment)

If I didn't want a stick, I'd much rather have a CL-S with a damn nice interior than a POS (Altima) with a bigger engine (more torque, duh) that is marginally faster. Oooh, slower by a car length in the 1/4 mile. When they rag on you for having a "slow" car, have them sit in your drivers seat and then tell them to STFU and wipe the drool off their face.

Yes, I have been drinking with my friend named "Jack", so ignore me if I'm totally off base.

I understand your point but what Im trying to point out is the fact that these cars that are supposedly faster is still debatable. I don't go by what any magazines #'s say because we all know they are biased. If a car beat me in the 1/4 mile good its a faster car good race. I just want somebody to prove it......drags open in March and Ill be looking to see how well the competition holds up and hopefully all these speculations will be put to rest.

That will cream them all, for about the same price except for the lamborghini, of course. CLS has the best bang for the buck!!!!! Period!

Lou, I'd be happy to run my 6spd 350Z against a 6spd CLS in my area after my break in period (at the track, no street racing, this aint F&F). Maybe Shawn S or Zapata?? I will say that my butt dyno says my new Z is alot quicker than my auto CLS was, but I've never been in a 6spd CLS, and I can imagine it would probably be a very close race based on the times I've been seeing. I have seen a few dynos posted at my350z.com that would indicate the car magazine's take on the Z's 1/4 mile and 0-60 are pretty acurate but it'd be cool to actually test this at the track.

I'll back up Zeroday's challenge down here in the ATL.. The CL-S does get respect from thoes that know what it is but most of the time people don't and thoes that do know what it is typically have a faster car or a TL or CL. It is though not a speed icon nor anything that inspres a feeling of speed....

The other I was out in my Z and a spotted a 360 mondial F1 (Sp?) and went after it Just to see if the guy would talk... He did and liked my Z and was quite impressed with it.. this is not something that the Cl will receve.. but in a field of accords, civics, maximas, sentras..... the cl does get some respect and even sometimes with FAster BMW's...

..... Wow it has been a while since I have posted here....

So let me get this straight the CL-S doesn't inspire a feeling of speed but is as fast as the 350Z. The Z is a great car and is considered a sports car while the CL-S a luxury cruiser but it will still give it a run for its money.

I don't know about the Z in the 1/4 but are they doing sub 14 last I saw in the mags low 14s. It has been proven that the Cl-S can match those times and do it with less HP, sunroof, heated seats, back seats, and with a smaller displacement engine and the Z inspires a feeling of speed.

Having owned a CL-S for a period of about 6 months, I have always thought that it had many smooth curves and soft lines, sort've like a woman. Not very racy looking, just very smooth and looks a bit long for me. W/ the spoiler added, it looked a bit more balanced, but the butt is still very smooth and long. Shaped for a very nice cruiser!

As for the CL-S vs. 350Z debate. Perhaps that 0-60 or the 1/4 mile the CL-S would be close or even w/ the Z ... but at the track, w/ the Z's struce braces, stiff suspension, and brembos ... it's going to be extremely difficult for a stock CL-S to beat. However, best of luck as always!

Best description I've heard for the 3.2 CLS.
Sums up my thoughts as well.
