Painting Interior Trim

All the threads I searched are old or have broken links.

Has anyone done this lately? I've got Taffeta White and I want the ugly brown painted white to match. Spray paint with a clear coat seems like the easiest way. I've also thought about some sort of plastic like paint that you dry with heat, it seems more durable.

For anyone who's done it, is there any way I can just mask it off on the door or do I have to remove the panels completely (which means cutting them off).

Does anyone have a link to a DIY?

Thanks.

I am 90% sure if you take the door panel apart you can remove the trim without cutting. I would sand it down, and then use white spray (or get a can of Taffeta), and then clear spray.

Lord Helmet painted his trim. I'm pretty sure he took the pieces off, sanded, primered, painted, maybe clear coated. He eventually ended up doing them again because he didn't like the color

The trim is held in with plastic rivets. You need to cut or grind them off. Then find a way to re-attach the trim.

Yup, gotta cut the plastic rivets off to remove the door pieces. I used small sheet metal screws to hold the trim back on.

to take those panels off, take a heat gun or a butaine lighter and melt the plastic rivets. Then use small screws to reattach

I've been looking to do this for quite some time,

so you have to take the door pannels off, then break the rivets behind the panneling? or can you do this with the door pannels on?

Also, don't the center console pieces just pop off?

Center console peices pop off pretty easy, just have to pry them up evenly so they dont bend or crack etc... Tools arent needed for this, i worked my way to the middle starting at both ends of the trim...

On a side note - most DIY rattle can interior jobs ive seen have came out less than good - if you go this route make sure you do a quality job and not just paint and clear coat and slap em back in.

There should be a lot of sanding involved and its hard to get quality paint/primer/clear out of a rattle can ---

If it were me and i wanted to do it right, id take them out and have a professional paint them... my .02

Has anyone tried vinyl? Seems like a smooth surface would bode well for this w/ no risk of a bad paint job?

NSXNEXT,

That SSM paint is killer. Especially love the painted dash was it taped off or does that particular piece come off?

Tried vinyl but couldn't get it to lay flat with the bends.
The dash is the dash overlay kit that I painted SSM. I have the gauge cluster and the sunglass holder piece painted SSM.

My buddy did this last weekend. Hasn't done the doors yet - that's this weekend. Sanded down with 400+ grit and then sprayed with several coats of silver. Not sure on the paint brand but it was primerless.

Make sure you mask off the back and tabs so that it sits back on the console/doors correctly.

any tips on how to spray these pieces evenly or getting it to come out nicely? I've seen too many tacky DIY painting to jump in head first on this one...
