pacel shelf rattle fixed ONCE AND FOR ALL!!

OK, this post is going to seem very SHAWN S-esque of me but i think it will be helpful to those that want to truely solve the parcel shelf rattle...mine has been rattling since day one and after 2 dealer visits, it still was rattling...fuck the dealer, i did it myself and it involves taking out alot of parts of your car but it not bad. first you have to take out the back seats and the middle console in the back as well as the rear parcel shelf..in order to get at the parcel shelf you have to take off the side molding by the window...i took some photos of it to show that indeed in the 2002 model year, extra insulation has been included much like the 2003 owners are showing that they have..looks like the sound insulation was mostly solved only after the 2001 model year..

ok, now you after you take out the parcel shelf, you have to go in the trunk and unscrew the nuts that hold the inside break light in place....after doing so, i pulled it out and noticed that the thing had been rattling against the metal under the parcel shelf as well as rattling against the glass...the 2 circles in this pic show where the break light had left marks from rattling...this information proved useful in the next step...

once i got the brakelight out i brought it in the house and used some black, felt-like weather stripping about 3/4" wide and 1/8" thick to put a band across the front where the thing rattled on the glass...i just glued it on there with super glue...

this pic shows me pointing at the 2 peices of the underside of the brakelight that had been hitting the metal frame under the light...i put 2 small strips of felt here as well as you will see in the next pic after this one...

after the glue had dried, i just put that back in and noticed a MUCH tighter, snug fit as apposed to the wiggly fit before the new felt even when the nuts were tight, the thing still wiggled...BUT NOT ANYMORE...so anyhow, i put all the peices back together and took it for a test drive...the thing is SILENT now, and im sure it will be forever...it was kind of a lot of work just for a little rattle but if any of you with this rattle are annoyed with this as i was, its WELL worth the effort...took about an hour and a half to get it all done and put back together....while i was at it i also got some gutter gaurd for my grill....i like the way it turned out!!

you will notice that i left out the middle "wing" chrome part of the grill, i think it looks much better with that off...plus now i know the gutter gaurd wont scratch it!!

any better tips on how to remove the back seat\center console\parcel shelf? the rest of the instructions seem simple enough. i will be attempting to do this the first chance I get .. probably this weekend!!

2 + years of rattle, atleast 2 dozen trips to dealers .. no luck.

this should work tho

the 2 back seat bottoms just pop up, just yank on them raelly hard, staight up....then you have to unscrew the console, you will see its very simple, 2 screws in front, 2 screws back by the seat belt buckle under the seatback...after you get the console out, there is one screw on either side under the seat back at the very outer corner...again, very simple...and all the screws/bolts ate 10mm so you only need one tool. after those bolts are out, the seat back just lifts up and out....its easier to get it out if you put one hand in the trunk pass-thru....after you get the seat back out the parcel shelf has 2 plastic rivet things that just pop out. then you need to yank down the covers on the sides by the window that i took pictures of in my first 2 pics of this thread...after that the parcel shelf will pop up and out with a little effort...its not too hard at all

unless they did a thourough job like this, you can look forward to it coming back...my car was in the dealer twice for that rattle and other members had their car in more than that for the same rattle.

Would you please point out where you put the felt on the face of the brake light. I don't see it in the pic.

Also, I have a parchment interior. Do they have a felt that would match? Where can I get the felt...and what is felt BTW? Sorry...the last question is a stupid one, but I just wanna make sure what it is. Thanks for the great info.

the 4th pic on the first page shows the felt on the face of the brakelight housing....the felt is weatherstripping for a door, it can be found at home depot or any store like that....the color of your interior wont matter because that felt is hidden below the black part of the glass so you cant even tell its there once its installed....

I did pretty much the same thing a couple of weeks ago. I dynamatted the top and bottom of it, and put foam tape along the bottom. I also dynamatted the sides in the back. Those were rattling quite a bit too. But one thing, you don't need to take out your seat to take out the parcel shelf or brake light. I didn't. Just those side pillars.

you can get to the parcel shelf by removing the side pillars? are you talking about the pieces that goes up and down along the sides of the rear window? was it easier to remove those?

my other concern is removing too much and not being able to put it back solidly again
