Over-revved the engine (5 AMT)

What happened if you over-revved the engine at 2nd gear? I know the engine speed limiter will cut in and out but will it hurt the engine!!! Will it damage the engine?

the limiter is designed to protect the engine.. but I guess you should not drive 10 mins while bouncing off the rev limiter....

Yeah, don't worry about it. Most of us have done it by accident at some point.

some of us have even threw it in Neutral on full throttle thinking the shift gate was in Sport Shift mode...opps...

I was trying to catch a Porsche coming out of a toll booth.

When the manufacturers set the red line for an engine they always give themselves a cushion. For example Honda's JA32 probably comes apart at 9k rpms, but they've given themselves an electronic rev limiter as well as a large rpm cushion so as to never see 9k rpms.

are we talking amnual or auto? if you were going 80 and put it 2nd instead of fourth eventhough the car would stop spark and fuel the gear would drag the engine into the 10K rpm range probablly causing some valves to fail starting a possible domino effect that would lead to a new engine being required...if however youre talking an auto...no biggie i do it all the time

oohh just imagine our cars revving to 9K like the s2Ks.. that would be something..
anyone know if its possible? to get upgraded parts in order to achieve this?...
any thoughts scalbert? ericL? anyone?

I just hit the rev limiter VERY HARD when down shifted from 4 to 2nd.... and the rpm just went past 7500 rpms and started bouncing hard.... I was caught off guard.... now each time I downshift I hit the rev limiter ...

To do this consistantly you would need to rebuild the heads and possibly use stronger rods. Oh yea, and a new ECU...

But my car has seen 8500 revs on a missed 3rd to 4th shift. Good thing engine braking inertia helped get on the clutch pedal or it could have been higher.

nice!! higher revving means the engine is producing more power right?..wouldnt this be better than a 3.5 conversion?? 3.2 revving at 9000 maybe 10000 with the right parts..haha..

The high revs were not intentional though!!!

And no, higher revs does not mean more power automatically. The engine has to be able to fulfill the air flow requirements at the higher engine speeds to make power. Which if designed to do so will typically make the motor have less power in normal driving conditions.

Take the S2000 for instance, it has great power but not have useable power for everyday driving. People do not spend their time driving at 7k revs nor do they want to in traffic. People normally move around at 3k and have the pull when they need to get in front of the car next to them. This is something the S2000 lacks.

Remember, torque moves a car and HP is the rate at which torque is applied. The following is a great article on Torque and HP values:

http://www.vettenet.org/torquehp.html

It takes quite a bit to make an engine breathe at both low and high revs. Honda does well when it comes to the high revs range and OK in the mid range. With the CL-S being the first avenue into making useable torque (more than the NSX). But they still need to look into making low end to gain more popularity and forced induction would do it, just IMO.

i've hit the rev limiter plenty of times on the 1-2 shift, when the weather is cold the tach flys through v-tech alot faster than it did in the summer so it throws the timing on your shifting off

Just FYI, V-Tech is a toy manufacturer: http://www.vtechinc.com/home.jsp

You went through the VTEC range quicker... :P :P
