Outta gas?

Has anybody ever run out of gas in their 01-03 CLS? I'm just curious seeing as I read back a while ago that the car has some type of filter that recirculates unused gas fumes back into the engine. I've gone past the empty needle as far as my heart could take it and never run out of gas and I know I've burned at least 3 or 4 gallons past empty.

there is exactly 3 gallons left after the gas light goes on. i've never ran out before but i've gone pretty far past E. i just try to find a gas station before the needle hits the peg on the cluster.

That last sentence reminds me of a Seinfeld episode involving a Sabb...

When my gas light has come on and I fill it up shortly after, there is usually 4.1x gallons left out of the entire 17.2

I have never run out of gas in anything. I just don't see how people do?

How hard is it to buy gas when your gauge is at a 1/4 tank?

I agree with fuzzy....on very rare occasion's does my CL ever get below 1/4 of a tank of gas, dont like to suck up all the debris sitting in the bottom of the fuel tank!

where do you think your fuel pump sucks gas from the top of the tank it sucks the fuel from the lowest point in the gas tank so what debris are you talking about?

I ran out of gas twice in my old 2.2CL. The first time I was parked on a hill with the front end facing down. The second time the car was sitting passenger side downhill. Gravity had more to do with actually running completely out of gas on those occasions. The point I was trying to make in asking the question of anyone running out of gas is if the filter system somehow increased the actual mileage due to fumes being reintroduced to the engine from the filter. Don't make me go back and research about the filter in my manual again because I left it at my other house. Otherwise, no I've never run out of gas in my CLS.

Now I've been in a few cars driven by other that ran out of gas. Maybe that's why I don't run empty.

Pushing a 15 passenger Ford van is not fun!

The charcoal canister you're talking about is used to purge the fuel line of gas vapor when it's initially pressurized. There's a hose that draws the vapor out via the intake manifold once the engine is running. It's mostly an emissions thing and will do nothing to help you if you run out of gas. Every car has had these for at least 10 years now, maybe even 20.

I've only run out of gas with a car that didn't have a working gas guage... needless to say it's been about 20 something years ago...

Just keep in mind that your fuel pump needs to be submerged in fuel in order for it to cool down.

I'll also add that the fuel filter is attached directly yo the fuel pump in the tank. So this minimizes the chances of anything plugging up the fuel system.
And I'll also say that I'm not sure what these "bottom of the tank debris" are. I had the gas tank out of my 94 explorer with 100K miles on it & the inside while discolored didn't have anything in it.

I think crud in the tank was a bigger problem in the past. Probably in no small part due the rate at which we, the public, use gas, it doesn't spend nearly as long hanging out in the underground storage tanks at the station. Also, most gas tanks are plastic these days so they aren't going to rust or flake off the anti-corrosion coating.

For those who had run out of gas. How many time did your CL stall before it is completely empty. I ran out of gas on my grandpa's sienna once, and usually it takes 3 to 4 stalls to go completely out.

Ive never ran out of gas in the CL yet due to the fact that gas is so expensive right now, and every time i get to about half a tank i fill up!! I was told that if you fill up before you go empty you save $!!

I heard something else, you save more $$ when running with less gas and better for your car.
1. Less gas in tank = less weight
2. Using most of the gas in your tank helps burn off all the stuff sitting in the bottom of the tank.

i think your are actually just spending less money every time you go to the pump(which is more often than if you actually ran your car to E)

wouldn't you save more by only filling the tank halfway and running it to empty. you would have half a tank less the weight. the benefit in mpg would be less than 1 more than likely. not even worth my time of filling up twice as often.

VIP-
i am lost on the physics of how your method improves mileage. any further explanation?

Man I know what your sayin and I agree. What im goin on is the salesman that sold me the vehicle said, if you fill up at half a tank you actually save money. It might not be true, it might be just a myth, and not a fact? Also the way gas prices are always fluctuating. Sometimes to me it seems like a smarter way to buy gas before the prices goes up any more, before it gets to E. But I dont always use this same method when filling up, I often run a whole tank to E, but usually fill up before I get to E, thats all im sayin.
