One muffler fell off.

Today, while backing out of a parking spot, I heard a thump. I thought I hit something even though I was checking in my rearview mirrow and back up camera. Checked again, saw nothing so I drove off. Later, my friend pointed at the muffler and asked me what happened. I looked and was surprised. The left muffler was hanging as is someone kicked it down. I looked and saw the exhaust pipe broke off just after the joint. No sign of anything. I'll again tomorrow since it was dark and raining. My car has 49,693 miles on it now.

Judging by the pic i'd say that is a warranty issue .

I think the exhaust has a lifetime warranty. Pretty sure it's longer than the regular warranty anyway.

Sorry to hear it Mike. You just got bad luck with headers/exhausts... Time to go HKS or comptechs :-)

:o :o Mike,
I am having bad feelings about this, it does very much appear to be a warranteable issue. Let us know what happens.

Well, from the time I heard the thump to the time my friend saw it, I drove for about 5 miles in stop and go traffic with no hard acceleration with loud music. After I knew about it, the exhaust sound was obvious. I even tried to punch it and my car sounded exactly like a civic with fart can.

I had this happen to me in a 74 Cougar (yeah, yeah, I know, I'm old). Backing up I heard this tremendous sound like there was something coming through the floorboards. The muffler fell off and got jammed under the car and as I backed up it forced forwards and up. Just so happened I was on my way to the airport, had good clothes on and it was shitty out. Tied it up w/ a string and hit the bricks!

I agree w/jens since it looks like it cleanly broke off where the weld is.

From what I see, I've been having a leak for a while ... see the black mark caused by exhaust gas at the bottom of the pipe ... will see what they will say tomorrow morning.

Not a problem, Mike. But not all of the credit can go to me. My svc mgr did give the okay on it. Sucks that it happened though. But like Dan said, American made, gotta love it. Strangest damn thing i've seen though.

I just saw this post. The same thing happened to me at 40,000 miles. It even broke at the same weld point.

I called and told the dealer what happened and even considering the circumstances, the earliest they could get me in was 2 weeks later. Well, when I got the car in and they looked at it, they agreed to replace the muffler under warranty, however they had to order the part. They insisted that I leave the car there until the part came in, since it was "dangerous" to drive it around like that!

2 weeks? I guess THAT'S the difference between a good dealership and a crappy one. And if they insisted that you leave the car, they had better offer you a loaner for that time period!!!

my 2 cents
