You will probably want a bigger bike soon after. I first learned how to ride on a 900rr. So don't think you have to get a 6 cause it's your first bike. I'm sure you will find something for 5 grand, keep us posted on what you do.

My first bike was a cbr600 and I dont regret it at all. Your doing the smart thing buying used first. I dropped 2 times just in the driveway. You can always move up, I got cbr900 6 mos later then a year after that I got my GSXR-1000. First start off in cycle trader(if your have that) then go to bike shops to check the bikes in person.

I don't think you're going to have a lot of luck getting either of those bikes for around 5k. My friend just picked up a used 2002 F4i and he payed closer to 7k for it - it did have low miles though.
I won't get into the whole "good first bike" argument - get what you want, just respect it. I'd also highly recommend taking an MSF class if you haven't done that yet. Also, I'd recommend taking a look at SV650, or if your mind is set on a supersport - check out the suzuki gsxr...
Hey gdubb - what year gixxer did you get? I just picked up my 03 1k like 2 weeks ago - the break-in period is killing me.

Find the bike that you feel most comfortable on. You may or may not be able to test drive a bunch of bikes, but if you sit on a few you will know real fast what works for you. Also, I am with 99gixxer - take the class!!!!! I took it years ago and it is worth the $. Plus you get an ins. discount.

I worked at a dealer in the past. There is less than 20% mark-up. Thus a $9,000.00 bike has less than 1600 profit on the front end. There is a hold back which is a few more buck for the dealer of course and then there are junk fees like dealer prep and any monies made on financing.

Good Or Bad Deal...?
The only way you're going to know if it's a good deal or not is to do some research on your own. Look at online bike sales & look at what people are asking...each market is different. Assume a little bit for mark-up & realize you are looking PEAK season. It's going to be next to impossible to break someone's balls on price this time of year.
www.cycletrader.com
Try Yahoo auctions/classifieds too. My last bike was bought from a guy on Yahoo...but I bought in November...got a great deal.
Good Luck & remember, even if you don't get a smokin deal on your first bike... atleast it won't depreciate as bad as a car...

Mr Big, hoestly thats a little high for an 02 only if this used, this is a new bike now correct? You should be able to find one for about 6500-7500 I think depending on the miles. If your buying used DONT buy at a dealship trust me(PM and I will give you details why). Just go there to look but then buy from an indvidual. Also there are things to look for also as far you know if its been droped and not just looking at the plastic

Right
Really should stick to a cheaper bike since this is the first one anyhow...like everyone has said...you're going to drop it(atleast once & hopefully you won't be on it). And yes...dealerships will rip your nuts off in season.

I mean, theyre making at least 500 bucks already. Plus, they want to get rid of this bike fast since its been on the floor for over a year and is costing them money to keep it.

OK a little more info for ya. These dealers could care less if you know what the invoice is or what YOUR willing to pay. These are toys and they dont have to give deals because almost every dealership works the same, sometimes almost no competition. But If you do want this bike let them know its been on there show room atleast 6-8 months. Bikes come out in March, and none usually get produced after November. Now ask yourself this: Is it worth it to but it new, or save atleast 1500 bucks and get yourself an Arai helmet and Joe Rocket leathers. Which you WILL need.

One more thing is that the dealers make money on the new "hot" sport bikes. If you choose something that has not been made over for 03 you will likely find better pricing. For example the new 600RR or the ZX-6RR will not go cheap. Also, the dealers make MORE money on the used bikes, but may also be able to be more flexible. Think of it this way, they screwed the guy they bought the bike from and now they have a much bigger margin on the bike.
Oh and FYI when I bought my 7R, my local dealer wanted 1k more than a paid to a not-so-local dealer. That is a decent savings to drive an hour. Also, the dealers are owned by the same company - go figure.
Go luck!
