Ok, my first dumb noobie question.

Now, before I get flamed like crazy I have searched high and low for the answer before posting. I have seen no mention of what the "road lamps" on the 01 and 02's do. I wish the 03's had them b/c I will end up w/ an 03 instead of an 02 unless there happens to be a 6speed on the lot then (I doubt it). I assume they light up but aren't as bright as fogs?

Zach---------->putting on the flame suit now

So do they light up at all? Or is it just a plastic piece there for cosmetics?

yeah at least 90% of the '01/'02 CLS owners here on ACL have upgraded the road lamps...i'd say about half have used comparable 5 watt bulbs from PIAA/Polarg that are a much lighter shade of light, but they won't illuminate any better...the other half of us use an 18 watt bulb from PIAA/Polarg that not only provides a brighter shade of light, but it illuminates much more from the stock lamp...does it illuminate like a fog light?? no, but from about 50 feet, it looks noticeably better than the stock lamps...plus they kinda give a bit of a sporty appearance, striking fear in traffic ahead

they serve virtually no function past a few feet in front of the bumper is pretty much the bottom line.

as for burning issues, it's not worth getting into...u're gonna get some burning on top of the housing, but since the stocks do that anyway, don't worry bout it

note - if u get the PIAA/Polargs, make sure to wear surgical gloves or use a towel when installing the bulbs...the oils from yer fingers will rest on the blue coatings and heat up and boil, causing the bulb to bubble and burst prematurely

check my siggy for additional bulb info on the car if yer interested

the '03's have no lamps...just a black plastic insert for cosmetic purposes...originally, i thought it was not possible to convert the '03's road lamp part of the bumper to the '01/'02 road lamp housings, but Shawn posted pics that showed the cosmetic piece in his '03 was actually the same size and shape of the '01/'02 housings, therefore it IS possible to put the '01/'02 road lamp housings in the '03...problem is u need to wire the bulbs either to the stock HID's or have a separate circuit using the switch on the TL's fog lights located next to the sunroof & cruise control switches to turn the lamps on & off

o, keep in mind i said TL FOG LIGHTS, not road lamps...that's b/c the TL has legit fogs that serve a purpose

i know this is a lot of info that gets confusing...just try and read it over and over and picture it in yer head...u'll get it sure enough
