Oil Change
Hello Guys,
First of all, let me thank all those who helped make my decision about buying an acura an easy one. Thank you for all your opinions and advice. I have had my car for 4 months and no problem at all as yet.
Now it's time for my first oil change and i was wondering if I should use synthetic oil from now on. i heard that it's better and ensures that the engine and all last longer. My questions are
1. Is it true that synthetic oil is indeed better?
2. If yes, which is the best one to buy?
3. I am in houston, texas and if anyone knows of a place where i can buy this oil at a reasonable price, then please let me know.
4. Does anyone here know of a place in houston where i can but my oil and take it to them for an oil change.
i was thinking of buying Mobil synthetic oil from Sam's club.
Any advice would be highly appreciated.
Thanks

All tests that I have seen indicate that synthetic oil is better than organic, it does not break-down.. Sams is probably the cheapest place for it, although some people report Wal-Mart has a good price also..

Number of Miles
Thanks for the help. After how many miles is it recommended to change the oil? I know most people say 3500 miles, but is that really essential or what's a good mileage?.
Also, when i change from organic to synthetic, do i need to flush the system first? Also, is it a regular thing for customers to take their own oil to someone and have it changed?
Thanks

With synthetic, you should be able to go 5000 miles without worries, even up to 7500 before you have to change it. ALso depends on the filter. What I do is around 4000 miles I check it frequently and just change it when it starts to get too black or I see to many little particles in it which means the filter is done.

I've been using Mobil 1 for 10 years on cars I typically drive 120,000 miles as well as my friends race car. While it is hard to say if I've ever "needed" it (none of my cars have ever burst a radiator hose or otherwise overheated, and are not abused), I think the purity and protection are worth the difference. I go 5k between changes and drive 70% freeway. I also use it in my Explorer. I use the Bosch filters from AutoZone.

Major brand synthetic oil can easily accomodate 10K miles. What's the point of buying synthetic if you still follow the petroleum oil change schedule. Both Bimmer and MB do the oil change at about 12K intervals with specific synthetic brands, Castro makes it for Bimmer and Mobil is one of the recommended for MB. If these high performance engines can withstand the 12K scheduel, what's so special about our engines Some time back, Consumer Report did a major study on different brands of petroleum oil on NY taxi cabs!!! The conclusion is that there was no wear and tear of the engines with the 6K oil change schedule.
Heck, owner's manual for most makes specifis 7.5K oil change!!! The owners change their oil frequently like 3K or 4K are just throwing money away, especially with synthetics!!!

I was going to use the Mobil 1 5W-20 synthetic oil, but am still unsure about which filter to use. The 2 names that i have read here often are by Amsoil and fram x2. Some have also mentioned the Purolator and Bosch. Are all these good is one better than the other due to some reason. If so what should I look for when selecting a filter. My driving comes under the normal conditions also. I might travel 3 times a year or so for longer distances, but mostly on the freeway to work and back. Work is about 10-15 miles (one way).
