OEM Alarm options..
After reading about MchTypeS's car being stolen it brought a few questions to mind. What addons/options can we do with the stock alarm. I have seen/read about people adding a shock sensor and a pager connection, but what else can be done. Do we have a motion sensor that would go off with a flatbed/tow trucking was being used to hijack it? Here's what I've thought of, yeah or nah on the possibility/feasability.
1) Shock sensor (has been done)
2) Pager hook up (has been done)
3) Motion sensor (?????)
4) Intrusion detection on truck and/or hood (????)
5) Auto closers for windows and sun roof (???)
6) For any programers....cell/pager hook up to broadcast GPS position if stolen. (Don't know how feasiable, lojack alternate)
Any others?

motion can be done but will be a pain since it;ll go off all the time.
we already have alarms on our hood.
If someone really wants the car they'll take it even if the alarm is going off.
Just look at tow truck companies!

It sounds like we are mixing up shock and motion sensors.
1)Shock sensors go off if someone was to hit the car (shatter the window, attempt to jack it up, tow it). You can set varying levels of sensitivity. I turned it to the max on my old car once and it was so touchy that it would go off if someone shut a car door next to it.
2)motion sensors detect motion inside the car. They came standard on my Audi. If someone were to open the door or reach into the car, the alarm would go off. I once left the sunroof open while I ran in a store. I watched a leaf fall off a tree and drift into the sunroof. The second it crossed the plane, the alarm went off.
I worry more about the joy riders than the professionals. If a professional wants your car, there is not too much you can do about it....

i got the ungo shock/motion sensor combo. it has both features on it ($39.99).
the motion sensor detects motion of the car (such as being towed). I think what gobridge is talkign about is a proximity sensor that senses movement either outside or inside of the car or both (dual zone prox.).
i also go the pager, but none of this stuff has been installed yet because it was sent to my home office while im' in kansas until august 17/18. the pager alerts you to what's going on with the car (door open, hood open, trunk open, impact, etc.).
The stock has triggers on the doors & locks, trunk, and hood. i think the headlight theft thing is done by them ripping off the bumper rather than opening the hood...don't know 'cuz i haven't stolen one. after looking at the helm, it seems that the shock sensor is being added in parallel to the hood switch wire, which will make it kinda tricky for this pager thing, but i'll find a way around it.
this stuff will be installed as soon as i get home so i'll report on it then.
i think a shock sensor should be sufficient, but the ungo one is both shock and motion (got it from crutchfield.com).
a prox sensor sounds pretty tricky considering the ones i looked at use microwave signals to determine if anything is in it's "proximity". and these are usually mounted in the center of the car which would make wiring a hassle.

4. Stock alarm takes care of that already. Both hood and trunk.
