Nitrous blew rubber tube off throttle body
I hope someone knows why the hell this happened, but tonight I launched from a stop WOT w/Zex 75 shot nitrous and it launched hard, but 1 second later, there was a huge popping noise, like the tire blew out and I smelled smoke. I pulled over and found that the rubber hose that connects the throttle body blew off and tore some of my hood insulation like a little explosion happened. I had to reconnect the hose and all seemed well except for the Nitrous needle which also blew out of the hole it was screwed into on my AEM CAI. Did my nitrous somehow ignite in the throttle body causing it to blow off my intake system and cause some smoke? I did a few test runs after w/o nitrous and all seemed back to normal. Don't think a plug went out or blew a gasket since it still pulled hard after the incident.
Thanks ahead of time.

thats really strange.. it ignited inside your TB.. your going to want to sell that kit ASAP and get a wet kit!! much safer... either that or get a zex nitrous injection cone filter..

Okay, talked to the tech at Zex and our local performance shop and they all said that it happens when there is too much compression and load which causes an intake backfire. They recommended retarding my engine a few degrees. For the time being the recommendation was to only run it at higher RPMs (2500+) and not at a dead stop.

Not too sure yet. Taking it to the track next weekend. Hopefully gonna get the engine retarded 2 deg. first so I can get on it quicker. I also may have to swap the trans also b/c the stupid POS wouldn't shift out of 2nd when I use the nitrous. My guess would be anywhere in the mid 13s?

You should never run nitrous below 3k rpms. Just get a window switch, it'll prevent that from happening again. And a wet kit is not always "safer", fuel can puddle in the manifold and cause an even larger backfire than what the poster experienced.

Ah, good to know that. Thanks. Good point on the wet system also. Hey, do you know what bottle pressure is too low for benefit? I'm sure the power tapers as the PSIs drop, but how low can I go (still get approx 50 hp gain with 75 jet) until I should just refill it?
Also, does the Check Engine Light always turn on when using the NOS? Mine does
FYI: VSA was off.

I dont see why the CEL would come on, never heard of that happening. And I think general consensus is that pressure should always be at least 1000psi, below that and you can expect some power loss. Get a bottle warmer, that'll help keep the presure up. I would say take it to a seasoned nitrous proferssional. It sounds like you have some issues, and N2O is not something to take lightly. I've seen people completely destroy their entire intake from bad installs or just the occasional nitrous "burp".
