Newb Question about First Mods

Hey there, I'd like to put around 1k worth of mods into my car and was wondering what you guys would generally recommend.... I'd like to go in the direction of appearance and performance, so any and all advice is much appreciated.

Thanks.

Lower the damn thing first and foremost, get the 4 x 4 look out of your system. A nice subtle drop is the Comptech Lowering Springs or the Eibach Prokit.
Then move on to CAI, and Headers.

What's the difference between the Comptech and the eibach prokit? Also, if I bought the springs would I need to take it to the dealership to get it all installed? How much do you think they'd run me?

Also, what are CAI and Headers, and how do they work adn how much do they cost? I know its probably a stupid question, but I dont know. On the same now, what's the "icebox" and how do the sway bars work?

thanks again.

OK
I agree w/Chopper, you need to lower it first. I would suggest the H&R Sport drop (what I have)...you can get the springs from www.howbarmotorsports.com for $127 SHIPPED. You should be able to find someone to put those on for ~$200. While you are at it, look at how many miles your car has....if it is over 25-30K, you will want to change out those shocks at the same time, since the new springs will put more pressure on the old shock, and if they blow you are going to have to pay twice for what is essentially the same install. Go for Koni yellows if you can afford them, tokicos are a VERY good alternative (and a lot less pricey)

CAI stands for cold air intake. A CAI replaces the stock air box (where the air filter goes) with a long, more open tube, and puts the filter element outside of the engine bay. This allows the intake to gobble in cold air from outside. This increases horsepower b/c cold air is more dense, and thus will allow for more molecules of air to be entered into the combustion chamber. you will get approx. 10 WHP for this mod...

Headers are the exhaust piping that come directly off of the engine block. When exhaust gas is pushed out from the cylinder, the goes into this piece, which then funnels the gas into a single tube, it goes through the cat converter, and then out the tail. The exhaust manifolds (this is what a non-performance header is called) were engineered very restrictive....freeing up this exhaust ability will add ~20WHP.

As for prices, I said what the springs would be. Tokico's (Blue) will be about ~275 off of Ebay, (White-Adjustible) are ~375 off of Ebay. A AEM CAI runs about ~200, while the icebox (Comptechs CAI) runs ~275. An incebox is a good choice if you want stock sound....while the AEM will give MAD V-tec growl. Headers are a touchy subject on AZ. The top of the line are the comptechs, which run ~1200. Alphawerks have some now at ~600, while Stone and OBX run ~$300. Also there are Megan headers, that you can get for ~250. Do a firum search to find the myriad posts and deliberations on these choices.

Have fun, and make sure to save $$ for rent

Yeh, JaredGMS posted about all the info you should need.

The other thing about the Icebox, other than the more stock sound, is that it is more stock looking and easier to maintain. Cleaning the filter is easier because of the location. I've had both and like the Icebox better. If you do go with an AEM, look into also getting a bypass valve for it. The filter is close to the ground, and if you were to go through some water, bad things will happen.

H&R sport springs are the way to go. I have those too, for now...

Enjoy....

With only $1k to spend you could do the following:
  • CompTech Sport Springs (01-03 CL & CL-S) $299.00 - lowers front 1.5"/rear 1"
  • CompTech Swaybar Upgrade (01-03 CL, CL-S) $329.00.
  • CompTech Titanium Series Front Strut Bar (01-03 CL & CL-S) - $319.00

NOTE: these prices are off of CompTech's website which are a bit higher than you can get the parts for.

Installation and alignment could cost you another $150-$250 more.

imo for the looks/perf combo springs, cold air/headers...if you cant install any of these your self get AW headers,H&R sport or springs and remove the lower resonator from your stock air box and add K&N drop in filter...your car will now be about 1 second faster in the 1/4 which is huge BTW and look the part

some good exterior mods are the front grill made by ronjon, you can find that in the black market in the off topic forum (sponsored sales), also maybe debadging; thats almost free and it looks way better. plenty of info on that topic if you seach it.

I cant thank you enough for all the valuable information. Now installation of the springs and shocks can be done at the same time? Think it'd be cheaper if they were both done together?

I was looking for the H&R sport drop but I couldnt find it. But I'm not sure if I need the "EIbach prokit" then I get the springs separately?

Also, for the shocks, tokico's blue what are some good sites besides ebay that I can get them for? Are there any specific tokicos blue (model number or such)?

Lastly, if I first go for the lowering/shocks would the rides' smoothness deteriorate? I know its a give an take but would the ride quality be worse?

Thanks again for helpin me out - the search function is pretty tough to navigate through.

I wish I did the CT spings and Konis at the same time. It ended up costing me double for labor and alignment.

with any drop, you will lose some ride quality, but sing these good components you can still make it s good ride....
Also, do not buy a strut tower brace. Unless you are doing some SERIOUS driving, it is a waste of $300 IMO.

Use the $$ to get some HP mods first.

and yes, you should get them installed together.
