New Skyline gets 8-speed CVT Tranny

Only in Japan...the next Skyline gets a paddle shifted 8-speed CVT tranny. A road test in C&D says they never got past 6th gear at all. Why would you need eight gears???? Sounds like you would spend all your time shifting up and down.

8-Speed and CVT??

CVTs have no specific gears, they are nearly infinitely variable in a set range. In other words, they have no gear steps from the lowest ratio to the highest. By indicating 8-Speeds would seem that there are steps which wouldn't be a CVT.

Maybe they mean CVT in another sense.

I've heard of that before. They program the computer to have artificial "speeds" in a CVT. Its because most drivers can't grasp the concept of a CVT so they cripple it for them.

The 8 speed CVT is artificially geared in a certain mode. When in the normal mode, it acts just like any other CVT. I don't know the reliability of these CVTs coming out. Seems they are more prone to breakage. At least the G35 is going to use the Q45's manumatic which means its internals are rated for a more powerful engine.

Wow that is gonna be f'n awesome. Hopefully they will allow you to keep it in constant CVT mode witout the speeds. I would love to hear that engine sing at redline for an extended period of time, and image the acceleration.

I don't think I could ever drive a true CVT tranny equipped car. Comeon, how could you drive a car that doesn't rev?!?!?!

I Think in a CVT car, there is a REV however, the RES is propotional to the amount of the acclearation/speed needed.

As the you go faster the rpms does not fly higher... as the CVT would be continoulsly going into lower gears..

I wish I could drive a CVt car just to have a feel..

Don't the new A4s have CVTs? Go test drive one.

Where the hell would reverse be......upper left........or lower right, and would you have to have someone in the passengers seat shift the last two gears!!!!!!!

CVT essentially means the further you press the pedal the faster you go, right?

So you would still need to have at least two settings... cruising and racing so you can set the pedal to be more touchy when racing and more giving when cruising.

Also how would they work out gear lag when you let off the pedal? I would imagine if you let completely off from a high rate of speed you could put a passenger through the windshield or does CVT remove the gear lag normal cars experience?

I'm sure the CVT will work great, Nissan takes a lot of pride in the Skyline, and I doubt they want to give up the title of "the most extreme streetcar built". I want one. Hmmm, now if only I could get a 0% interest,0 down, 0 payments until 2015 loan. Yep then i'd have one.
