New radar technology?

Pulling into my bank, noticed a cop showing his radar gun to his family before they stepped in to the adjoining restaurant. Overheard him say "they want me to try it out".

Of course I walked over and asked what band it was, wheter X, Ka, etc. He mentioned it was not even a band but a new technology to soon me implemented. "I was surprised by his willingness to share with me".

He mentioned that it was not a beam that was shot at a moving target but a type of light (of course moving at such speed). Also that it operated on "trihertz" (whatever that means).

He didn't know much more than that. He also mentioned that this new technology would make all current radar deterctors obsolete. And just when I was looking at putting down $400 and change for a Valentine One.

Does anyone have anymore information on whatever technology this might be? So far, nothing in car magazines!

This is probably a just Lidar gun. A Laser gun to estimate your speed. V1 does detect Lidar....Acutally it is the best Lidar detector...

I think its a type of "doppler" radar, and yes, no detectors now can detect it. I actually just got a ticket and NOTHING AT ALL came up on my Passport(not the very best, but works well enough). He nailed the speed dead on at 85 and he was comming towards me, no other cars around me to judge his speed off of.

And of course you wont hear of it untill the radar detector companies are close to being able to sell them. Would you still buy a V1 knowing it wont detect the newest, most accurate form of radar?

All RADAR is based on the Doppler principle, click here for more info.

If he mentioned that it's based on light, then I agree with Nashua_Night_Hawk, that it's probably a LIDAR gun. Most radar detectors today also detect LIDAR (Laser), but as most know, since the LIDAR beam is much more focused, you're less apt to catch any stray signals as you do with RADAR. As a result, if your detector is indicating LASER, it's probably too late. Click here for how LIDAR works.

The good news is that since LIDAR needs to be "AIMED", has to be stationary, and is susceptible to bad weather, it's use is limited thus far.

Also, the Valentine One and the Passport 8500 have a chip that can be "flash" programmed to detect new bands of RADAR/LIDAR, so you should be protected for a while.

Gohawks63... You bet me to it, in responding that radar is based on the 'Doppler' principle.

Sounds to me like it is some type of 'lidar' gun. Those things are nasty...

I know most of the radar guns are donated by insurance companies and etc... but this new stuff isn't going to replace all of the radar guns. Most agencies have way to much money invested in their radar guns to just scrap them all and buy all new equipment. So go ahead and get your V1 off of ebay and save yourself some $$ because they are going to be using K,ka,x for awhile

The problem is if your department does make the switch then you'll be screwed. Doesn't matter if 99% of the rest of the country is still using the old technology, 99% of my driving is at home with this new crap now in place.

I think you guys might be missing the point. The police can't just develop and deploy a new radar technology. They must have Government approval to operate at another [new] frequency that they've been assigned to. Radar detector manufacturers know the assignment ranges and they have them covered today. Valentine is a good company so they'll know all about this beforehand; long before an actual radar gun shows up on the street. Remember when they went to Ka band? We need to keep our eyes and ears open and then we'll adapt...as usual. Perhaps the current bands are becoming crowded.

Of course there are implementation within the bands like wideband and moving/shifting frequencies and stealth and stalker technology and all that techo crap; this might be one of them.

Anyway, if this supposed new radar is not a doppler radar, it will have a hard time becoming justified as a legitimate speed device. Again, the police just can't employ new methods of tracking speeding cars without getting some sort of certification and justification within the law and the judicial system.

The racket currently in place with the radar gun manufacturers and the radar detector industry will make all this evident and apparent. There won't be any secret radar guns clocking cars that can't pickup this new technology. If it is used, it will be challenged. And then it will be discovered.

So don't worry. Keep looking out for the instant on radar cops, the one's that you really need to be looking out for. And if the scene does radically change, your V1 is worth gold on the open market; especially from the unsuspecting buyer who doesn't have a need for more than the average to high average user. V1s fetch 85% of their original SRP on eBay...consistently.
