i just noticed on the acura site that there is a new navi dvd out. the new version is 2.04, released 5/2001. unfortunately, there is no indication on the acura site of what's new with this version. their coverage maps on the site are for the previous version.

Prolly wouldn't help. Like how CDRW still dont' work in most car stereos, the DVD discs prolly aren't reflective enough to work in the Navi reader.

Well Acura better take the approach software makers take.... If you buy version 2, you're entitled to free upgrades to version 2.xx until it reaches 3.... I mean if they make u pay for 2.04 then 2.1, that's crazy.

 

The "free" NAVI updates for the first two years only apply to the HDD (hard disc) 96-99 NAVI systems.2000-on NAVI's are DVD, no free updates.

 

So does anyone know what is updated on V2.04 from V2.03? Seems like a pretty minor upgrade to me. If all they did was add a few new gasoline station icons and updated the "Topeka, Kansas" map I won't even bother driving the 6 miles to my dealer for the free DVD update. I suspect there are minimal changes but if someone could get a hold of the ACTUAL release history that would be EXCELLENT.

Im not sure. Seeing as all they did was add .1 I'm suspecting that there was some significant bug in the last edition of the software.

Becuase neither the Honda or Acura sites have coverage maps for 2.04... their both showing 2.03... that makes me suspect that not much has changed otherwise theyd be tryin harder to push 2.04 out the door?

I just got back from the dealer.
Only years '99 and older get the free upgrade. '00 and up can suck it, unless you have it written on the contract.

And my dealer was bullshiting me about free upgrades too

You know why right? The '99 and before used a removeable harddrive (which makes me think they were cutting costs with the DVD based one) and with the removeable drive, you can upload new data to the existing disk. Whereas in the case of the DVD, they have a new excuse to charge you for a new disk.

 

yeah, my dealer Radley acura bullshitted me too, i'm sure yall have heard me bitch about this before, when i bought the car they promised me 2 free dvd upgrades. when i cam to collect, they acted as if i was smoking crack. i bitched at the sales mgr, he agreed to pay for 1 of my navi upgrades. i got the 2.03 version, i dont know the diff btw 2.04 -2.03. hopefully someone finds out. Dealers and salesmen at radley are all bastards in my opinion.

 

I'd be more worried about that 3 year warranty... seems to be a year short.

and go to the navi update and it then coverage area. it will tell you in red letters what has been added. For va looks like just winchester got added *never been, and not planing on going* but for example in FL they added daytona beach and a couple others, so i would reccommend you all go and see what had been updated for your surrounding states.

somethings strange. They post 2.04 (5/2001) yet their coverage site shows 2.03 (2000).

Will hit their customer service line when they open and see if I can get this straight.

P.S. - their customer service answering message even mentions 2.03 as the latest.

Give it up -- I had my wife sitting there when the sales guy at Keyes "PROMISED" that I would get all of my DVDs updated for free. I even contacted Keyes customer care department, and the lady said that she hated working there (I won't comment on the rest...)

I ran into another member, and at least his dealership just puts in the upgrades as they become available.

I keep asking for the "Dealers Hall of Shame", but what can you do?

I called about five Southern California dealers after I was "burned" for the free DVD upgrades, and at least four of the sales people I talked to promised that I would get free DVDs (they are all a bunch of liars). Acura care said it was up to the dealer -- if you don't have it in writing, be prepared to hunker down, or just pay-up, and worry about more important stuff.

Sorry, but a lot of us got burned on that one. Acura Care knows it, but they don't give a $hit.

Just got off phone with Acura DVD sales. They said that there is *NO* difference between 2.03 and 2.04. They said that the labeling people put 2.04 on the dvds yet they know for sure there are no changes.
... at least thats what they said.

They said around Sept they are planning on releasing a new version with additional coverage and get this... new features.

I can tell you for sure that the folks on the phone do not know for sure. It's like with PCS phones, they are only reading what's been written.

I do that sometimes with phones. If there is not a significant difference between software version, I have the customer care people let caller know "there is no difference [to you, Mr. Customer] period". But there is a slight difference.

If you load 2.04 and the display says 2.04 instead of 2.03, then there is some sort of difference. In any case, I'm still waiting this fall.....

I was also told that I would get 2 free updates in a year. I call my salesperson today and he was as nice as could be. Until I asked him about my upgrades. He told me that it was from Acura and not the dealership. He said that Acura would send me a letter and would let the dealership know that they will pay for it. I asked if there was a phone number that I could call Acura to find out and he said no, but he will try to find out something. Said he would call me a home and got off the phone. I never received his call yet. I will call him again tomorrow.

 

wow, i didn't expect to start such a controversial topic.

our acura salesman told us the same lie about the navi updates when my wife was looking at an mdx. then we either read here or on the mdx forum that it was a lie.

oh, well.

i think we will both skip the 2.04 update unless we find out what's in it and it is something that affects us (like southern california updates).

I have heard two stories about the single layer/double layer issue.

I and a another USENET member loaded the DVDs into our DVD drives. The 2.03 definitely had a substantial increase in total disk space used vs. the old 1.09 disk.

The 2.03 (don't have 2.04) only has enough data to require the single layer.

Funny, even an old 2x Pioneer DVD I got hanging around from a "test" machine, said that it would play dual layer disks.

Someone here said that they though the Alpine/Acura folks would stick to single layer -- I think I still have my 1.09 disk laying around somewhere. Does someone have a 2.03 disk that was replaced with a 2.04?
