New mod idea, adding oxygen into the engine.....

Hey, I was sitting in chemistry class today and talking about combustion and enthalpy etc... and i thought of something. I know that nitrous is an oxidizer and that is why it adds more horse power. But what is someone were to feed oxygen directly into the cylinder?? the rate of reaction and therefor power released would be so much greater. also, i was thinking you could mix nitrous and oxygen in a tank to get the best of both words. what do you people think of this idea?

Good thinking although somebody beat you too it It's called Nitrous Oxide When it breaks down Oxygen is released into the engine while at the same time cooling down the temperature.

good idea but won't work
combustion can't take pure oxygen -- to volitile pure oxygen is i think the most volitle element there is --nitrous "reduces" pure oxygen. (-:

I hope you didn't think that when you are saying nitrous you do not mean straight nitrogen. N20 is "nitrous", there already is oxygen in it.

I got a better idea. Re-route a feed from your AC unit into your intake. So instead of losing power when you have your AC on....

pure O2 is very combustible, take the space shuttle for instance.
solid state boosters?

When you write out the chemical equation for internal combustion there is H2O left over. Hense the reason you see water coming out of tail pipes all the time. Now if you could invent a system to capture the left over water and use it to cool the intake charge that would be something!

ah. i think i was just mistaken then. i always figured (for whatever reason) that nitrous oxide just acted as a catalyst for the reaction, not that it actually broke down to supply the oxygen. anyway, still thinking about it, nitrous is N20, correct? well then twice the amount of nitrous would have to be broken down in order to get the enough oxygen to match the same volume of pure oxygen. (if that makes any sense to anyone else) anyway i think i will drop the subject, people have already tried it probably, it labs and whatnot, and nitrous seems to be the best option.

Ford does that on the Mustang I think. Can't remember the model, but its the badass one.

try it.
my money is i lasts less than 5 seconds before the engine bursts into a large spectacular fireball. isnt oxygen incredibly flamible and if it gets near anything remotely hot it combusts. like the people who are on oxygen tanks that fall asleep with cigarettes and they die in an inferno, it would probably explode before it even gets into the cylinder.

I had an idea very similar.

I thought of having a supercharger with two exist ports. One for direct injection into the engine (common exit port), and one to maintain the oxygen level in a separate compressed tank. This compressed air in this tank would be used during low rpm ranges, thereby increasing horsepower and efficiency at both low end and high end throtle positions.

It's the new Lightining I believe...

Gabo, your idea is not half bad except for having to carry around that big ass tank.

the definition of combustion is the a reaction involving oxygen (give or take a few words). adding more oxygen would result in more of the petro being consumed and therefor more power per stroke. if you add too much oxygen, yes the engine will fall apart. but then again you are able to change the amount of petro in the cyclinder per cycle, therefor making sure all of the petro and oxygen is consumed. this would result in a more powerful and lower emmissions engine. if there is too much oxygen, its the excess reactent and therefor it will just be flushed out the exhaust, same goes for the petro.
