New Miata and 250HP Mugen S2000

No pics yet, sorry.

-----------------------------

It's already the world's best-selling roadster, but Mazda's engineers aren't resting on their laurels when it comes to the MX-5. Exclusive images in the current issue of Auto Express magazine reveal the replacement for the evergreen soft-top, and it takes its styling cues from the forthcoming RX-8 coupé. The incoming car will have a scaled-down version of the 6's 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, reduced in capacity to 1.8 because the standard unit was thought too powerful.

In its new guise the unit will produce 177bhp at 7,000rpm - that's 31bhp more than the similarly sized engine in the current car. A six-speed gearbox will be used, keeping the model's traditional set-up. Styling follows Mazda's new range, with familiar head- lamps and a rakish nose that resembles the RX-8's. Expected in 2004, the replacement MX-5 will lose none of the current car's fun, but will bring with it the benefits of more modern technology. It will be built on the RX-8's platform, but the current double-wishbone suspension will be substituted for a multi-link system on the rear.

Meanwhile, mounting pressure in the roadster market is forcing Honda to up the stakes - and how! The firm is to launch a hot Mugen special edition of the S2000 for the UK - and it will be an extreme version of the already impressive standard car.

Thanks to a new exhaust system, replacement air filter and a stripped down weight-saving cabin, drivers will enjoy explosive performance. The car's 0-60mph sprint is expected to beat the standard roadster's 6.2 seconds. Power will also be up on the current car's 237bhp, with the Mugen breaking the 250bhp barrier. The special edition will be based on the concept version that appeared at the Geneva Motor Show two years ago, and will have new alloys as well as an imposing rear wing. The Mugen S2000 could hit UK roads as early as next year.

They should drop the new rotary from the RX8 into the Miata. And put some real competition on the road.

I'm not big on the Miata styling. But it sounds like it will compete with the S2000 pretty well now. Of course I really don't like the S2000 much either... If they put a powerful 6cyl in it, I'd change my mind.

Post that pic whenever you find them. I'm curious to see what the new miata looks like. And same with the revised S2000.

I am guessing that the new Miata will look more like the Z4 than anything else.

I will post the pics. We will have them soon.
