new to me CL-S 2001

Hey Guys,
Ive been reading through the forum and I've pickup some helpful stuff. I just got a 2001 CLS with about 70K for a real good deal. Can anyone give me advice about the tranny problems/warranty. First, is it still covered and if so is it true that acura may still honor the extended warranty after expiration (7yrs/100k) ? Also, is there anyway to assure that I get a new tranny if I see problems that the dealership doesn't? How will I know if the tranny is showing signs of the common malfunctions? I haven't noticed anything yet and must say I love this car. Any advice on simple and relatively inexpensive performance upgrades? thanks for any input

The official warranty on the transmission is only untill 100,000 miles, BUT even after 100,000 miles you are still partly covered. I recently went in to get mine looked at and flushed out, while I was there my mechanic informed me that several cars over 100,000 miles come in and get there transmission replaced for half price or no cost. Make sure you keep all of your service records to show that you have maintained your cars condition. (fluid changes, alignments, etc.)

Unfortunatly when the transmission goes, the dealerships will be able to pull service codes from your car. They have to make the decision to change it. If your transmission is going out, if it is anything like mine, it will not go slowly. Literally mine slipped on Monday and died on Tuesday!! The traction (exclamation point) light will come on, the VSA light will come on and the check engine light will come on when it is going.

Inexpensive mods are somewhat hard to come by. Intake is usally under $300, headers you can get for under $400 (unless you want to go with comptech{the best quality/performance}which is over $1000)

Let us know if we can help you with anything else!! And congrats on your new car, you got a good one!

CHeck out the forums, some people have had their trannys replaced after 100K. It's all about who bitches the hardest. If your tranny goes at 104,000 chances are you can bitch and have it replaced. It's cheaper for them to replace it instead of going to court. Now if yours goes up at 150,000 who knows.

I love my CL S too man...it sucks that they have transmission problems. Now I wish I would have shopped around longer for that manual version!

just some friendly advice: since your conserned about the tranny, and you want yours to last, the first inexpensive upgrade you should buy is this:

http://www.comptechusa.com/store/560030cl.html

You will need to do a drain and fill with the install, so buy, 3 quarts of honda atf at your local dealer.

Comptech Parts give you the best gains and/or quality out of all the manufactures...

I prefer start out w/ the an intake, then headers, and then exhaust... do the full catback if you plan on supercharging it... which i highly recommend

Welcome to the forum !!

I don't think we've heard about any transmissions being replaced after 100K miles on "good faith". It normally assumed that if you're worried about the cost of replacing a transmission that you sell the car before 100K.

i had the same concern with the tranny. i went to the dealer and they said there was record of a higher flowing oil jet being installed in the tranny. something to do with cooling, i guess that is the root of the cl tranny issues. anyone have conflicting info?

Converting to Manual?

Does anyone know if it is possible or reasonable to convert the 2001 cls to a manual tranny, like the one used on the 2003?

I wouldn't even go there. This has been covered a few times.

yes is can be done. Right now a TL owner is converting his 5spd auto to the 6pd manual. They both have the same powertrain.

But that's a TL. I can see where the fun and determination lies there since it wasn't offered. On the other hand, abomb008 is asking about a CL. A car that was available w/ the 6MT in '03. It wouldn't make any sense to do a swap like that in a CL. It would more than likely be cheaper and way less time consuming to simply trade it for a 6spd. After all, there are a lot more parts that will need to be changed than just the tranny.

You are right it might be easier to just trade to the 03 CL-S MT but there wasn't that many made so they could be hard to find. As for cheaper or time consuming, he might be willing to do the work. I am just giving him an answer to his question. Plus if he is curious what is involved he just needs to go to the 2nd Gen TL forum and find the thread. The only part difference is that fsttyms1 needed a Type-S engine to make this work since he had a TL-P.

^^^ BTW, I just checked out fsttyms1's threads on the TL board, and I have to say, that is going to be one sweet TL when it's done. Definitely a total one-off ride.

Sorry to your thread, man.
