New life for (my) old dog.
With my 01 CLS approaching the 150k mark, I did a bunch of car shopping over the last few days. I drove an Altima coupe, Accord coupe, an RX-8, a BMW 325 Coupe and a TSX.
And the end result: Right now I'm on the way to drop my car off for a paintjob, new tires, timing belt service and a new AC compressor.
30-35k just doesn't get you a lot of car these days. The Accord coupe was nice, but kind of bland. The Altima looks cool but the interior is bland as hell and the car just isn't very fun to drive. The BMW was an '05, and was nice, but not 35k nice, and the RX8 - well, I live in New England.
Either way, all of the above cars (imo, of course) are less fun to drive and have less inspiring interiors than my 2001 CLS. I own it, and the average trade-in offer I got on it was 8k with the exception of the BMW dealer, who offered me (with a straight face) $4000 (my car is loaded, spotless inside, nav, brand new transmission, everything):
Yeah...
Anyway, just thought I'd post up my experience. My CL has been great in the 3 years I've owned it and hopefully I get a couple more good years out of it. It really is a fantastic car that's all around better than anything else you can get nowadays for under 30k.

Three Wheelin'
I love my CL as much as the next and I have 150K on my 2001 CL-S.. But I can't imagine getting 8K for my car on a trade-in. The only way that would happen is:
A.) The cost of the car you are buying is inflated to defray the supposedly high trade in value.
B.) The dealers are on crack.
No offense, because my car is pretty much the same as yours and I have about 4K in upgrades and I wouldn't expect to get more than 5K on a trade in.
Dealers are notorious to rip you off, but I don't think 4K is that ridiculous from a dealer.
Anyways, good decision on keeping the car, unless you jump to an Infiniti G35, Lexus IS350, or a BMW 335, I wouldn't get rid of my car either.

Yea if 8 grand for your car is a great deal. Obviously they were over-allowing on the trade and taking it off of their car. I have an 03 w/73,000 miles and my used car manager would give me maybe 9k. How much would you pay for a 7 year old discontinued model with 150,000 miles on it?
Dealers don't rip people off... they're in it to make a profit and that's what makes the world go 'round.

sorry to high jack the thread but suddenly my 01 CL-S w/ 84K doesn't seem so bad.
I'm hoping to get 9-10K for mine in a year or so (private sell) Trying to keep the mileage around 95K at that time.
Do you guys think thats a reasonable price?

As somebody who sells cars for a living... I'd have to say 7-8k for your car depending upon the condition unless your car is so clean you could park it in your kitchen and serve Thanksgiving dinner on it and it won't need tires, brakes, etc...

Ok maybe I will list it around 8-9K then. Thanks for the insight.

don't list it...keep it...unless you plan on buying a G35, TL-S, BMW 335, or whatever else floats your boat.
Your already @ 150,000...drive it to 200,000 if its in good condition and you've put money into it

First... your car looks great!!!
Second...my CLS has 131k on the odo and I am gonna drive it until the wheels come off or my son needs a car... he is 14yrs old... whichever comes 1st
...long live the discontinued, terrible tranny, but still freshly styled CL...I am happy and sad with mine like so many things in life...

glad to hear your trusty steed is workin' solid
make sure they don't spray the whole bottom grating portion white, but instead black.
it'll look MUCh cleaner.
