New Intake Complete

I finally got to install my new custom intake now that the filter came in and it is now painted. I had to cut the pipe length down a little but now it fit great. The filter is plenty large but still has plenty of breathing room.

Next week I will contact a company we work with to do a full CAD drawing from my prototype. Then I will get them to make me one, which will be powder coated, and try it out. If all works well the CAD drawings will be available along with the other parts needed.

It has become more of a matter to keep busy outside of what has become a very hectic office with many large projects going on. Little self-projects tend to take the strain off and keep my sanity...

Without seeing it I can't say for sure. However, from what I can recall about the AV6 it should fit just fine.

The only question I would be the mounting points...

Good point, yes it is. In fact I want to find a way to deaden it a bit.

I'll try to get some sound clips this weekend. But I might be able to get it at the track on Sunday...

Your intake system looks like the S2000 intake system, especially because S2000 stock intake system also uses a cone filter with a box to keep it a closed-element (opposite of open-element, hehe) filter system. Very stock looking. I like it! It's basically a short ram intake with a heat shield. What's the black housing made out of? Plastic?

Did you enlarge the opening under the cone (that goes into the
bumper)? It might be appropriate to add a 'ram-air' type contraption that accelerates air, say from the fog-light grill and directs it to the filter - this can help maintain a slightly cooler air-temp within your 'chamber'.

I used a design on my civic... make an opening that replaces the headlight and narrow it down to the 2.5" diameter halfway to the T/B - this is a race-only application (since you have only one headlight now and panty-hose as air-filtration), but conceptually you could recreate something similar!

Sheet aluminum with extruded aluminum angles for the corners. Or about $10 worth of material at Home Depot.

No, the opening with everything removed was quite large anyway and I didn't want to do any permanent modifying of the body. Plus, I plan on pulling the cover from what used to be the fake driving lights. This should allow air to fill in that area quite well.

Possibly and most probably. I'll have to look back at an install pic to see about the issues. Got one handy??

I'll post a pic later today.

You're going to run out of CL projects pretty soon...I think you should build a super charger! You know you want to.

I used to have the AEM CAI. I washed my car once and the filter wa soaking wet. I was not to crazy about it getting wet. I borrowed a pipe cutter from work and made my own creation, a SRI. I wonder if the heat shield, box, will make a noticeable difference. Here is a pic. Oh well, it keeps telling me taht my pic is too big. Iy y'all want to se it, I will email it to someone and they can cut it down.

Yes and no on fitting. If left as is the mounting point would interfere with the side wall. But if cut short as mine is done then it would definitely fit.

So yes, if the AEM was simply modified to a short ram then the wall and mounting would work.

I'll contact the sheet metal guy later this week about doing the CAD drawing and see what he would make the walls for. Once the drawings are done I'll post them for those DIY or have your own shop make them.

One thing I do need to work out is the humming that has begun. I'll see if I can baffle it some how. More on that later.

But I did take out the cover in the '03 where the '01/'01 road lamps are for the track today... That is another thread, once I find it.

I have a Acura CL type S and I have a powder coating company in Carson City, NV. If you need any information or assistance please let me know. I have powder coated several carts and motorcycle frames and know what powders work best for this type of product.

My modified CAI to a SRI hums also. Let me know if you figure how to stop it.

Sorry, but I can't go into a lengthy description right now. I used cardboard as a pre-form and then thin sheet metal after that for the main body. But no measurements have been made nor do I intend to. I will have the guys doing the CAD drawings take care of that.

As for directions, it would take longer to explain than it would to make one now. But the basics are: get some sheet metal and cut it to fit. Use angle stock, aluminum prefereably, to bolt the sides together. I then use weather striping to seal the edges.

It will becaome all more appearent when the CAD drawings are done. Plus, it might be easier to have someone make it in the end.

I don't know if the gains would be better but it will be tested. But it is a nice alternative to having a low sitting filter. It provides a true CAI system but with a shorter flow path and more piece of mind with a higher sitting intake, i.e. less chance if water ingestion if you have to go through a puddle.

As for me making them for others, I won't get into selling them personally. But if after the CAD drawings are done and a final unit is made I can test fit a few. Then I can arrange for them to be sold just as with any other product, through a known distributor.

With all of these high skill-level DIY's, I'm half expecting to see a hole punched in Scalberts hood for some kind of ram air eventually.
