Unhappy New guy needs help

Ok I just bought a 2003 cls 6speed anthracite with navi
I have two problems.
1. The car hesitates when I accelerate. I also noticed if I just sit there and let it idle I can feel it jump a little. This is only after it sits for 3hours or more does it do it otherwise it is pretty smooth. The gas pedal is a little touchy though.
2. Putting the car into 2nd gear isn't smooth(it will either grind a little or it is just rough) and especially first thing in the morning. The rest of the gears seem fine.

Anyone have the same problem or just tell me what yall think.
Thanks
Jeff

I have the 2nd gear grind you're talking about. I can't say what it is, because i don't know. I've posted about it before and people say that Acura told them its a characteristic of the tranny and not a problem. I've recently tried just moving the shifter into 2nd a lot quicker than i normally would so it can't really grind. Thats worked so far...

Cold temps can effect shifts into some gears. Noticed it more on my first 6 speed, not too much in this one. I have the same car, anthra/Navi.

I have the same 03 6mt cold shift into 2nd problem. I just treat it like you would treat a fine woman, warm up time and a little forplay.

Acura told me not to worry about it and be glad I didn't buy the automatic....thats was inside information from an Acura tech.
The running problem sounds like an Air/Fuel problem make sure the previous owner didn't
have a CAI on it before or other ad ons and forgot to reinstall the stock stuff back properly

Same here with 2nd gear. From what i can tell, it's pretty common with manual gear boxes. I've driven other makes and 2nd gear is sometimes not as smooth entering as others.

thanks for the info so far but anyone know why it is hesitating like that when it is cold. The acura guy was saying it does that to heat up the engine as fast as possible but that sounds like bs to me

By hesistating, do you mean idling rough ? I hav a friend who's dad has a CLS 6MT, and he beat the living shit out of his, and whenever I drive it, I notice that the idle and starting off into first is a little rough.

well when the car is warming up and u drive it, it stays a lil high in the RPM's then it goes back to normal it just does tht to warm up the engine quicker so its not really BS...cause i know mine shifts at high RPM's and is a bit jerky until it warms up then its fne..

I drive a 6sp Z and have the same notchy 2nd gear shift. No grind, but definately notchy. Not as notchy when I accelerate hard and shift around 4K.
Yeah, be lucky you don't have the slush box. Cause it can literally turn into slush!

That most definitely isn't the cause of the hesitation problem.

Your IAC valve (intake air control) might need cleaned/adjusted/replaced. Does the car rev oddly when coming to a stop?

Well the car only has 26k on it and was driven by a 58yr old. It only acts up after it has been sitting for a few hours or more. The engine is jerky for the first few mins of driving. Is that NORMAL??????

While the car is warming up yes it will not run as smoothly. Also, our throttle takes a little getting used to. At first it seems like it is a little too "jumpy."

Mine has always done this - at a steady throttle when it's cold, it sorta surges. It warms up quickly and once it's warm, no more surging whatsoever.

My dealer said it was nothing to worry about.

I also get the crunch into second when it's cold, and I agree with the rest here - it's just a quirk of the tranny, and nothing to worry about.

Enjoy your car!

My Legend did this when it blew a head gasket; water would seep into one of the cylinders when cold and it would run rough for several minutes til it cleared. Unlikely with your mileage, but it's one possibility. A compression check would show it.

PS- Us late 50's guys like to drive hard, too. The CL just feels like it wants to RUN.

How long did it do that before it blew?

I guess thats a normal thing for the car. I just never had a car that acted like that without a problem.

ps- haha I hear ya

It sounds like this is pretty common. I found the earlier comment interesting that it's a design element meant to warm the car up faster - and I'd say that if this is true, it works - I have never had a car warm up as fast as the CL.

Hey, thanks. I love 'em all.

Legend (95)

My Legend did this for almost 2 years til the leak finally caused the engine to overheat. Once the head got hot, the gasket would compress and seal again, problem could not be found when hot. When we repaired the gasket, the car had 98K on it. Cost me $2K for upper engine rebuild.

This condition was not slightly rough at startup, it was REALLY rough. A casual testis as follows- run the engine for only one minute at startup, then let it sit for 4-5 hours. You will have trouble starting, and when it starts, it will barely run, and shake the whole car til the water burns out.

I was luckly not to break a rod on the compression strokes.
