New Exhaust HELP!!!
New Exhaust HELP!!!
Alright, I want to hear from anyone and everyone that has a new exhaust. I am looking for something that is quiet when cruising, but noticable when accelerating. I am also hoping to stay under 150 per muffler. Right now I am looking at the 50 series flowmaster, but I am worried that it will be too loud. Any suggestions? I would be very greatful for anyone that would post a driveby recording and a 70mph in car windows up cruising recording. Also please tell me what type exhaust you have.
awe, give the newbie a break amir......
There are a host of exhausts out there. HKS, Comptech, Mugen, etc., They differe in looks only. You get slight gain in power like 3hp/3 ft/lbs of torque but not much more. Chods FAQ will give you more information.

Well, I have the Comptech's and I love them. I guarantee that what I'm about to say will have everyone disagreeing with me, but I think they're perfect.
They rumble on acceleration, and they have a nice low hum when at cruise that most people say is annoying and gives them headaches, but I think it's perfect and it doesn't bother me one bit (and I'm rather picky). I drive close to 85 miles a day roundtrip with work and they don't annoy me one bit. Actually, after the first week I hardly notice they're there. They bolt right on in about 30 min. and they look tight. They're a little above your price range, but well worth it IMO. My fiance, who's even pickier then the people on here drove my car about a week ago... and she loves the sound of the exhaust. So much so that when she gets her new car, she wants an exhaust. Anyway, that's my opinion. Most people do not like the sound of the Comptechs, but I think it's intoxicating......

I have tried both there is nothing in the FAQ and the search does not find what I want. I have been a member at TL for a while but I came over here to get a more diverse opinion.

The Comptech mufflers are probably the best in terms of sound,I cannot remember how many I have installed (dozens of em) and I have never had a single complaint everybody that has them loves them.Avoid the el cheapo cut and weld mufflers they usually cause more trouble than they are worth and typically are very noisy.I have not seen any HKS dragers but HKS is good stuff but like Comptech they are not cheap but this is a nice car so why fool around with substandard stuff.Jens
Though I do not have aftermarket mufflers, what you seem to be asking for could also fit the description of a CAI (cold air intake)..
With a CAI: you get a gain in HP, hardly any increase in noise at idle but a louder engine growl if you step on it..
my 2 cents

Um, did you guys notice he said under $150 per muffler. I believe the Comptechs are $300+ a piece. mbeebe save some coin and get the good shit, Comptech, HKS, etc. Anyone who thinks the comptechs don't sound good needs their head checked.
Agree with all the Comptech comments. I just put them on after sitting on the fence for over a year. Biggest regret - that I didn't do it sooner. Really does change the driving experience, especially from idle to 4000rpm; above 4000rpm, VTEC/CAI roar feels/sounds about the same. 'Course my wife insists my recent purchase was just a 'phallus enhancement' kind of thing...
I haven't heard of anyone putting Flowmaster Mufflers on a CL, but I have put a Flowmaster on my Ford Ranger. It sounds really good.
I don't have anything but a stock exhaust on my CL b/c I don't want any additional noise. That is what my truck is for.
Let us know if you end up getting a different muffler than those that are listed here.
