New Car A Question It's Been Sitting

Dealer found a Black CLS with Tan leather on his lot, that is what I am looking for. He seems to be giving me a good deal but when I went to look at the car one thing struck me. I looked at the date of manufacture it is 11/00. The car is still covered with the protective plastic and the interior is also covered. I figure the car has been sitting there for five or six months. I brought that to the dealer's attention and he stated that before I picked up the car he would let me drive it to prove nothing was wrong with it.

My question is what should I look for when I drive it? Am i being paranoid about the car sitting for that long? Yeah the battery was dead, he promised a new battery I believe that Not!

Thanks for any comments.

Peace, LTK

New battery, new tires because they will be weakened from sitting on one part of them for 6-8 months.
Maybe just go to another dealer and see what they have and forget about this uncertainty.

you can check the loyality of the dealer. Check the battery, maybe put a small scratch on it so you can identify it later. Then tell them you do want the car, under one condition"they must give you a new batt" Then, when your ready to pick the ride up, re-check the batt, and see if your small scratch is still in it's place.

this has worked for me in the past on various instances.

As for the engine/ride quality due to it sitting, I don't know. I know it is bad for a car to sit and not be driven or started in a long time, but not sure on new cars.

I wouldn't worry about the car sitting there as a bad thing for it at all..the first think i would look for is to make sure the car doesn't have any acid rain spots on it..Being a black car that seem to be the a problem when they sit on the lots. This is because most of the time the don't have enough wax on them to be protected..I know that you said it still has the plastic on it, which will help but still look out for spots!!The engine should be fine that's not uncommon at all to have a car sit that long..I have seen cars sit much longer then that, and they are fine!!

As far as the battery, It really dosn't need a new battery..The car only needs to run for a few mins and it will be as good as new..the only reason it could really be "bad" is if a cell is bad, and more then likely this is no the case..Trust me most of you that have bought a new car off the lot have had a dead battery..many times they come off the truck with a dead battery..this is really not a big deal..

Ask him to give you the history of the car!
(ie.) WHERE was it been?...at the "docks"?,...at some outdoor storage lot?...at a transporter's lot?,...at the Dealership? Why wasn't it sold at the beginning of 2001? Also, use that to negotiate a $500 over INVOICE deal!!!(Since the car is already a half year old!)

Happy Negotiating!

11/2000 is not that old. There may be a few of those laying around. Now 11/1999 would be old.

It is not unusual for a car to sit 6 months on the lot. Bad for the dealer, not the car. The tires should be fine, the battery will need charging and testing and pay attention to the brakes when you test drive it. Often times, if the car has been sitting, rust will form on the rotors and build up around the edge of the brake pad/rotor interface. This will usually wear right off after a couple of miles, but I have seen it neccessary to sand it off it is too bad. The telltale sign is the brakes will pulsate or you will hear a rhythmic thump in the front- even at slow speed. Also- check the paint, particularly on a Black car, for signs or acid rain or stain. If the dealer preps the car well, it will be buffed and waxed nice and shiny- no spots. BTW- I hope you are not paying anything over invoice- there are really good deals to be had on these cars now.

Mine was sitting around for about 6 months as well and as Wayne said, no problems! This was a fairly rough winter to. I did pick up the car for invoice and dealer hold back so it's probably worth it!

i think wayne is giving you the hint to maybe take a drive down to park ave acura to purchase your new car. since you're new to the site, you haven't heard about how awesome park ave is. anyways - if he can get you around invoice on one that is just rolling off the truck, take it. some people make the mistake of buying their car from another dealership, some people even make the mistake of getting their car serviced at another dealership ... eventually they all end up at the same place ... Park Ave ... wish we had one around here
