New Bulbs
I know this is an Acura CL site, but I can't help asking the question. I'm looking for some replacement HID bulbs for my truck and I want to try and get the look of the Acura HID's. I've been looking around at Sylvania, which seems to offer pleanty of options for me, but I don't know what the light actually looks like. I'm certainly not looking for that awful Rice Rocket blue...anyways I've noticed that you guys use PIAA a lot and I was just wondering what your suggestions would be. I'm up for anything.
Thanks...
Thanks...
You can't just replace the bulbs, I'm not sure if you are aware from reading your post, but HID stands for High Intensity Discharge. They are similar to standard headlighting systems in only that they produce light, and run off a source voltage of approx. 13.8 volts. You will need to buy the ballast, harness, and tubes. In other words, a complete HID system which will run upwards of $1,500 for a 'cheap' set. It still won't look quite right, as you will still be stuck with your factory headlight housings, which were not designed for H.I.D. lights. Yes, it does make a difference. The difference is the design of the reflectors and lenses. Maybe Eric L could help out with the particualrs of this if you are interested for more details in what seperates the passive portions of the two systems. I'm sure you've seen the aftermarket HID systems around that look awfully blue and a little "fuzzy" when you look at them, -that is why. Through a standard reflector designed for incandescent headlights, much of the advantages to the HID system are lost or faded, leaving a very bright, muddy projection. You will piss a lot of people off in the oncoming lane as a good portion of the light intended for the road ahead will also be refracted into their eyes or lost in space, so be ready for it.
It can be done, and it is done everyday. Usually though, not to the expectations of the purchaser and not very cost effective. You can however go all out and custom fit a set of projection HID headlights from say a bimmer into your current headlight housings, now THAT would be nice. I've seen it done on sedans, but never an SUV, it would be pricey though. Although, if you spent half the time that you do working on this that you do on message boards in general, I'm sure you could come up with something within a couple weeks.
Good luck.

Thanks for that link, man...I didn't know that site existed. Well, I guess its something else to add to my favorites. Also, I think I'm going to upgrade the whole lighting system, because I don't want that awful fuzzy blue color. There's a Yukon in town with "upgraded" bulbs and it looks awful, and it blinds the hell out of me.
Anyways, if any of you are Chevy Truck owners and are looking for an upgrade kit, I talked to my guy who did my wheels and bars and he uses Sylvania Xenarc...plugs into the factory Ballasts and you get two new headlights...real HID!!!
Thanks for the help!

Their bulbs are way brighter than PIAA.

Solaris bulbs produces a very White beam. not ricy at all and no hint of blue either. matches very well with the HIDS we have.
actuallly alot of members here have them as their highbeam bulbs because of the match in color.
