Hey guys, new to this foroum, just my little story i have an 03 cls 6 speed with intake, XS headers and comptech pipes, i have raced the car from a 40 roll and its always ran really hard, last week i took it to the track nearby for the 1st time and it was horrible. The car would hop all the way through 1st gear and i was only launching at 2k rpms, it ran a 10.00 in the 1/8 with like a 2.65 60ft. It shakes the tires rally bad where i just cant even step on it, what could this be ?
Motor mount problem, suspension, tie rods, axles ?
Im hoping to get some help before i spend a bunch of money thanks

 

It's a combination of things but a lot of it is suspension. Is yous stock? Motor mounts, get wider stickier tires, radius rod bushings.

 

Motor mounts a big one, especially if old or broken which happens frequently. Suspension is another. After upgrading suspension (shocks/springs/sways) i have zero hop 98% of the time.

I have tokico shocks and eibach springs lowered 2" in the front, and 18 inch rim very lightweight with brand new 225/40/18 cooper tires, but its not spining the tires, i know the difference of the car just hooping and shaking the entire car, this is gettting frustrating lol

 

maybe you should learn on how to feather the throttle.

its a mid powered FWD vehicle.
you're going to get wheel hop if you punch hard through 1st.

there's no way around it

 

p.s. wheel hop is how you break things.

learn to feather the throttle in first, then as soon as you hook, MASH THE FUCKING GAS

 

This isint my 1st car i know how to drive, im launching at 1500-2000 rpms at less than half throttle and the car hoops all thaaa waayy thru 1st gear

 

By them time im able to punch it im almost half way down the track, is only a 1/8 mile

 

all i know, is that if you continue to wheel hop while trying to race down the track, you're going to break things.

if it were me, i'd refrain from doing it.


it's just a characteristic of the car.

 

I had an 01 cls before and it spin the tires but wouldnt hop, i know the 6 speed hops a little more but this much cant be normal there has to be something that helps a whole lot more

start there, as wheel hop is WHEEL SPIN!

 

motor mounts, bushings, stiffer suspension, sticky wide tires, etc....

 

what kind of tires are you running right now?
I bet that is the problem.

How do i know if the motor mounts are bad ? How do i know if its suspension ? How can i tell if the bushing are bad ? I just dont wanna buy things for no reason i dont have money like that lol
And how much you want me feather the throttle launching at 1500 rpms and going a quarter throttle all the way through 1st gear ????

have someone rev the car while you look at the engine. A lot of movement is not good. How many miles on the car? You can see the bushings and they may look worn and cracked. Xlr8 has poly mounts.
Not sure if you mentioned, how wide are your rims?

 

123k miles and the tires width are 225 not sure on the width of the rims

My cousin has another cl And anything wider than 235 rubs when you turn

I have 235/40/18 on 8" wide rims. It depends on the offset of the rims if you'll rub.

 

I will check on those mounts and the bushings when i get home from work and will go from there.
Anyone ever used or heard about the torque dampers will they help ?

 

There are ways around it. you can hook up good without wheel hop, or spin tires without wheel hop.

Obviously you don't just want to mash down the gas pedal in first, and need to feather it. This is an issue for most people, especially now since everything comes with launch control. You can install an aem stand alone that has launch and traction control.

Things to help with wheel hop include:

Motor Mounts
Stiffy Mount
Torque Dampers
Radius Rod Bushings
Shocks/Springs or Coilovers
Poly/Spherical Bushings

If that is not enough try traction bars and slicks.

The reason you get wheel hop is because the car is compromised for comfort, not because it is fwd. Rwd cars can also suffer wheel hop, but not as much of an issue as fwd in commuter vehicles.

The ingalls stiffy mount helps. You can also search here for NRG dampers. The 6speeds have 2 dampers, front and rear. It's a pretty cheap upgrade. I can't remember off hand, but some civic model works. With poly mounts, dampers and a stiffy mount your engine shouldn't move much at all.

I got home and reved the car hard while looking at the motor and the only mount that seems to move a little is the passanger side.
Also the 2 damper move a little can they be thigthend up a bit ?

 

I run 255 and don't rub. There is more to consider than the 235 number.

I listed my response without wasting my time reading other responses I won't learn anything from.

Atleast I am not the one blaming tire size or whether summer tires or not for wheel hop.

Mounts are a wear item and if they havent been replaced, they should be at your cars age/mileage. That might be a good place to start.

 

I would think the offset would have something to do with that as well.. my stock offset was 55+ and I moved to a rim with a 33+ offset and have 225's on them and there was no issue with rubbing until I lowered the car

 

 

LIke we have said above. Check your mounts. Odds are if they have anything over 50k they are shot. They WILL cause hop. The items listed above will help eliminate it. Check and replace all your rubber bushings to help stiffen up suspension parts that can have movement. Also your shocks. Get a better set, some that are adjustable in rebound and dampening. You will be able to dial them in and help reduce it.
And YES, wheel width does have something to do with it. The narrower the tire the easier it is for the motor to keep them spinning without hop, problem is, is spinning tires doesnt make the car go fast. The wider tire will give you the traction and help keep the tire from spinning and allow it to hook up (also better tires that have better grip as well) but when they do break loose because of the higher grip level they can cause hop.

 

I finally solved the wheel hop problem with a set of nrg torque dampers thanks to the help of a couple members
