Japanese models have built cameras in their bumpers so you have a split screen on your monitor for side mirror/blind spots........
Why can't we have this extra toy to play with?

How about just adding the ultrasonic sensors to the corners and front-back (like the Lexus) and have the zone of safety shown around the car with green for safe, yellow for close, and red for your within an inch. Then you can check for all the sides and surfaces of the car and just flip on a nice voice or audio tone to let you know if you about to wack something or getting too close(just like commercial/business jet audio warnings).

There no demand for anything like that in the US. There's plenty of space in this country (i.e. the parking spaces are not that tight) and we have a different driving style in this country. If you back out of a parking space and you are looking at the camera instead of out the rear view mirror and you hit somebody...we'll that's bad.
The real thing is no demand. If you saw it on the CL sticker and it cost and extra $1000, most Acura consumers would say, "remove that please and reduce my sticker by $1000, thank you."
IMO.

Sorry Ken...you don't live in SF or NYC...that's for sure...I see people from out of town try to park and I just sit there and laugh...

Parking is an art...that is lost upon those that do not live in the big cities.

Oh, come on guys! I know there's some congestion in America. I've lived in the big city before. There's no overcrowding in America like it is in Japan. Who's going to create and market a product for an overcrowded America? Have you see a new model vehicle specifically to deal with packed American freeways, small American parking spaces, and high-priced American gasoline? Nope.
That camera is still a luxury at best in America. Just like our Navi. There's not enough navigation to be had in America that we need to make this standard on American cars. Am I wrong?

I could care less about the camera in the back, but I would like an easy to use warning system to allow me to get in and out of tight spaces (which I DO EVERY DAY). A beeper with timing based on distance would be fine thanks -- and I would pay for it!

some sort of rear end collision detector
would be sooooooooo sweet. If the option were availible reasonably priced, I would buy it without thinking twice. (I wonder how hard it would be to make one?)
Given the lovely stories on here about how
easily the paint chips, I'm thinking I may
either have to practice parallel parking for a few hours with cardboard boxes, or
never venture into Queens/Flushing again!
(Maybe I'll drape some towels over the
bumpers when I // park. :P)
