Navi error....Help
Navi error....Help
Hey im almost done converting my car to navi but i keep getting the error message "dvd disc reading error, (formating) Please consult dealer." what could this be and how could i fix it? It is the acura navi disc not some illegal burned one or something. Im still waiting on the guy to send me the security number so i can access the thing but im guessing if it has this read error now its not going to get better. The disc also seems to be scratched (i cant believe i just spent all this money and got a screen with dots all over it and scraped up some, missing joy stick, and the dvd appears to be scratched
im screwed im afraid The worse part was i talked to the seller a lot and he said the unit was in very good condition
i thought i could trust him seeing hes a freakin mod on the other board but i guess not Hopefully he will clear this dvd problem up, looks like im on my own for the security number since he cant seem to find it
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Navigation problems - Possible solution
I don't have a navigation unit on my CL, but I do have one on my 2000 Honda Odyssey. Very, very occasionally it will send a message like that. Usually it is because the door to the DVD disk unit is open (actually open 1/100 of an inch). My solution then is to open the door, remove the disk, say a quick prayer to the God of Hondas, reinsert the disk and close the door. The unit reinitializes and the problem goes away for six or eight months. Clearly, the door sensor is too paranoid.
From my knowledge of the computer world (I purchased my first personal computer in 1978 and currently own five Macs), your navigation unit is telling you it cannot read the disk. You should remove the disk and clean it with a MILD cleaner - such as windex. Dry it with a CLEAN AND SOFT cloth. Make sure that there are no fingerprints on it. Then reinsert the disk and the problem should go away. Don't forget the prayer to the God of Hondas.
DVDs hold almost 10 times as much information as a CD. They do this by storing the information at almost 10 times the density. This means that a smear or fingerprint or scratch that would not bother a CD is fatal to a DVD. Handle them with care and respect. Acura will charge you about $800 to purchase a new updated disk.
If the problem reoccurs, consider that the DVD or the laser or the read sensor are marginally defective. If you have a new CL, and the cleaning I suggested abovd did not cure the problem, I would hightail (curious phrase) it back to the dealer to insure that I had a track record of reporting the problem while the car is under warranty. If the DVD reader is the problem, I can't imagine that the replacement unit would cost less than $1,000. Remember that the whole system - DVD disk, DVD reader, and screen cost about $2,000. Small color screens aren't that expensive.
If you have a friend with a Honda or Acura navigation unit, you might swap the disks for a few minutes to see if the problem stays with the original car or switches to the second car. If the problem follows the disk, then the disk is the problem. Other than cleaning the disk (and praying) you only can replace it.

i got an old version of the navi disc 2.03 i think...what version do u have? i'll sell it to u for cheap if u wnat it. i got the new version so i dont need to old one any more.
Thanks so much BLeahy for the suggestion. I will try that tonight when i get home Its funny you bring up the disc door thing because mine just came up with an error saying disc door not closed despite the fact it is. Then i opened it and closed it and the screening saying its getting a gps signal came up but i couldnt wait for it cause of class so i think it may be the problem. You dont happen to know where the door sensor is and if i could make it less sensitive do you?
Minla007 - I have 1.09 the old old one How much would you like for it?

1stGen - i just checked and i have the old old version 1.09...not the 2.03 that i mentioned before.....sorry for teasing you...
if u find that ur current 1.09 is too scratched up and is hte cause of ur error then maybe u should get the newest version 2.04 (i think), but i belive its $150
....but...if u wanna test ur navi unit out before shellin out $150, i can sell u the my 1.09 (no scratches) for real cheap...lets say ~$20 includin shipping
just let me know....btw, ur setup is tight...didnt think u could put a factory navi in a first gen....good shit.
