Mysterious solenoid on auto trans

Hello! I'm brand new here. I recently bought a 2001 CL that I really like! Yesterday I was servicing the automatic transmission - fluid and inline filter change. While doing so I just happened to notice this sensor or solenoid on the back of the trans case that wasn't plugged in. It was dirty and looks like it hasn't been plugged in for quite a while. There are no dangling plugs or loose wires anywhere. The car is 100% stock with zero mods. The Acura parts lookup simply calls it a solenoid (28400-P6H-013 SOLENOID ASSY. (A) (KEIHIN)). I have no warning lights, the transmission shifts and operates properly. The cruise control works. I have no idea what this is! Attached is a picture. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!

Thanks for the message. I'm still stumped. The car shifts perfectly normal and there is no plug or wire in the area to plug into this solenoid.

Ya know, I don't think I've ever tried it in manual mode. I'm most frustrated by the fact that I cannot see, feel or find a plug that goes onto the solenoid. If I could find a plug for it, I'd plug it in and see how the car reacts.

Upon closer scrutiny I don't think your sensor is a trans solenoid A.
Solenoid A looks like this.
??? You gave the wrong part number. Your part number is Solenoid A.
Black is Solenoid A.

The starter is located right above solenoid A. I think it even covers/hides it. ^ starter removed as shown in the pic above.

Here is a picture I found online. I put a red circle where the solenoid would be (not installed on this transmission).

The solenoid is not installed in this picture - where the red circle is.

In addition to the picture I just uploaded, I think I found the part on the Acuraoemparts.com. It appears to be the speed sensor. 28810-P7W-004 PICK-UP ASSY. Question is, why isn't it plugged in with no wire or plug in the area. Hmmm...

Part number 15 in this diagram.

SENSOR - SOLENOID for 2001 Acura CL

You're FUBR.

Something is not right here...

1. That sensor doesn't match the PN.

2. There's no radiator hose at the back of the trans.

I'm done with this thread.

No good deed goes unpunished, eh? Thanks for your help but the only thing 'not right here' is that I called the pick-up a sensor. The part number is correct and the image I provided with the red circle is correct. And it's not a radiator hose, it's a heater hose. It looks big in the picture but it's standard small heater hose.

Your help is appreciated but saying I'm FUBR and being done with it because *you* can't figure it out is kinda weak.

It's all good. I'm new here and probably shouldn't be asking for help.

When I find out exactly what's going on, I'll update this thread.

Mines blocked off too. Somebody probably replaced the trans with one from a different model that needs the sensor.

Dude that hole is for the PS assist for CL-P cars. The Type-S cars don't use that assist.

So that transmission was originally not a Type-S tranny. If you have a Type-S transmission, don't worry about it.

If you DON'T have a Type-S car, then you need to plug it in.

What's strange is that you have a block off plate too. It just has a plug on top of it. Kind of weird, but you might be able to just pull it out? Idk

I had the dealer look at the car. Indeed, the the part in question is a Vehicle Speed Sensor. However, my car does not use a mechanical speed sensor (it uses electronic signals at the PCM).

This model of transmission was used in several Honda and Acura vehicles and in this case since the transmission was replaced a few years ago by the previous owner, this explains why the sensor is there but no corresponding electrical connector to plug onto it. This transmission came from a different vehicle model that uses a mechanical speed sensor.

Thanks to those who offered up advice and opinions!
