Is my VTEC working?

Hi, i have 01' CL-S and I cant seem to feel the vtec kick in. there is no sound difference or different feel. there is no check engine light on. the car just revs straight up to redline no bump or nothing, almost like vtec doesnt exsist. any ideas? thanks...

Your VTEC is working. Don't worry until a check engine light comes on.

Yeah you really notice it unless your car has an intake. In my opinion. But try and look for around 4000rpm. Its some were around there.

Not exactly true...

VTEC won't engage if the engine oil pressure is under a specfic limit (i.e. the engine is low on oil). I don't think a code is thrown if the oil pressure is too low, but there should be an oil warning light.

Could also be a bad IMRC... I don't think that will throw definitely a code either...

Here's the dicussion thread about when Chris thought his "vtec was broke"

https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...highlight=vtec

Chris never mentioned a CEL IIRC (if i recall correctly).

Yeah John, I'm also going to guess it's the IMRC thats not functioning. This is a pretty common problem. Mine seemed to do it intermittently, and then it just started working fine again. It was kinda weird. typeR also stated that it can be intermittent.

Good luck! Either way, it's not an expensive part if thats what you find is the problem.

check your oil levels. vtec is oil pressure based, so low oil pressure will cause a lightened effect of vtec.

If it's anything like my 2.3 you won't know when it's engaging, you will know when it's *NOT* engaging.. abnormally low oil will cause it to not work and throw a check engine light (it's only happened once with me)

Vtec on my 03 CLS isn't nearly as noticable as it was in my 97 Prelude..

But like GreenMonster said oil pressure is a major factor, also if the engine is cold vtec won't enage.

You can disconnect the IMRC completely and a CEL won't show.

Angry

I took it out for a "test" today, even went up to 105mph, but to my avail, i can feel no difference through the rev band. i think i heard (maybe psyological) a little engine note change where vtec should be but very hard to notice. no jerk, no extra pull. still unnoticiable for the actuator(IRMC) which should activiate at 3800. FYI, still no check engine light so is my vtec and/or actuator working?

1. well i know the IMRC flips but i dunno if the teeth are broken since its plastic. can i check this myself?

2. can i check the vtec solenoid myself too? I dont even know where it is, so any information would be helpful + pics too.

Its called a Bypass Valve Actuator, make sure its broken first though before you go in talking a bunch of shit.
Once again i know mines flips but i dont know if the teeth are broken. if this guy is right about fixing the actuator then my rev band-vtec problem should be fixed 100% so right now im trying to find out how to check my teeth, probably have to take it out, so anyone with information and/or pics please post
