Thumbs down My OBD-II Port Is Missing

It would appear that when they replaced my shift linkage, they forgot to put the OBD-II port back in place. Now I get to pull things apart to get it back where it should be.

That's what I'd kinda thought. It'd be nice if the factory service manual told ya that.

Actually all 2003s are located under the steering wheel, not just the 6 speeds.

Will do. Hoping it does. It monitors miles driven, time of day (don't drive from midnight to 4am to save the most) and hard braking. I work at home and only drive about 6000 miles a year including road trips so I'm hoping it works out well and drops another 30% off my rate.

I had thought about it, as I dont daily drive my 3G TL.

but when I do, I like to accelerate and brake hard.
from my understanding, you only have to have the "snap shot" on for a month right?

if so, I can definitely drive easy for a month

They say it monitors for a month but they don't have you send it back for about 6 months. It doesn't monitor hard acceleration but hard braking is what they're looking for.

The terms do say that with your permission they can use the GSM link (used to upload the info the same way your cell phone would) to attempt to locate your car if it's stolen too. Kinda nice.

It uploads the data every 24 hours and then you can go online to your account and see the stats such has how many times you braked hard, miles driven and time of day driven. Helps you see if you're doing those things and try to do them less.

Once you get your discount and send it back, you keep that discount forever. So after that you can brake hard, etc all you want.

Mine doesn't. Tells you to go in the center stack in front of the seat heater buttons.

It includes the manual transmission so it'd have to be '03.

Gonna email Progressive after a month and see if I can send it back after that instead of 6 months. Because of where the port is, the device sticks out and it's a bit distracting. Good place to get kicked while getting in and out of the car.

Got it plugged in and going. Because of the location of the OBD-II port on our vehicles, it sticks out where you can hit it with your leg. I'm gonna call Progressive after a month and explain to them that it is in the way where it can get hit, unplugged, and even cause a safety issue. Gonna see if they'll let me send it back after a month instead of 6 months like usual.

In the 3 miles I drove over 3 trips (went to a couple local bars) last night, it says I braked hard 7 times. WTF? Braking hard is defined as slowing 7mph or more in 1 second or less. So like when I was going 10mph and stopped to park was considered hard braking. Most of it was the trip where I had to turn around on the street and then park. Plenty of stopping and going a little but I wouldn't consider it hard stops. How can you slow from that speed in more than 1 second? Even 90 year olds don't do that.

Then again, 7 hard stops may be nothing. Who knows what they consider normal.

Like I said, it all depends on what they consider a lot of hard braking. I don't drive a lot. Less than 1/2 what the typical American drives in a year. And I don't drive much from the midnight to 4am window either.

If they don't give me a discount, I'll just switch to someone else. Just hoping they do so I can get my coverage under $200 every 6 months for full coverage.

And thats at coverage levels over their standard full coverage. Now if I could only get insurance like my mom's husband gets. They have 4 cars. '08 Hyundai Elantra, '10 Sonata, '11 Sonata, and '00 S2000. Pays close to $200 a year for all of them. How the fuck. Suppose he's in his 50s and he's a cop so that all helps really lower the rates.

I'm so jealous. I'm paying $160 a month for an 01 CL, without even having collision coverage on it.

Damn. Im paying about $130 a month for the CL, but became eligible for the safe driver discount two days ago, so Im not sure what it dropped down to now.

The FR-S is only $70 a month, with the same exact coverage as the CL. WTF?

This is relative to my interests as I too have progressive. ($110/month) I just think my braking with bbk and all is gonna screw me outta the discount.

Anyways Weez why did you have the linkage replaced? Rust, or damage, etc? How many miles do you have? Don't think mine is bad just wondering what to look out for...

I don't know about Minnesota but in California and a lot of other states you can tell your agent how many miles you drive and at most they will ask you for proof of mileage for 30 days such as odometer readings or service records.

I'm an insurance agent and I wouldn't suggest anyone putting one of those devices in your car because what they get more information than what their telling you and its probably not neccessary.

I'd bent the cable where it attaches to the transmission while installing aluminum shifter bushings. Had to replace the whole assembly. No fun.

I'm cool with it. As I said, I drive less than 6000 miles a year. And they can only collect the data they make you aware of. Privacy policy explains it all. Anything more and they'd be open to a lawsuit.

Since that first day, I've had no more hard stops. Think part of the issue was that I was use to rolling in neutral for a bit and waiting until I'm fairly close to the car in front of me before hitting the brakes, hoping the light would turn green by that time. Driven less than 17 miles in the past week.
