My car is reported stolen out of Arizona..
So I was walking to my parking lot where I park my car (apartment complex) and I notice this State Trooper reverse parked in the space next to my car, engine running, trooper inside on the 2-way w/ someone.
I put some laundry in my trunk, and he asked me if I was the owner of the vehicle (my TL-S) .. I said, yes, and he asked for my license, ran my # in the 'puter and told me my car was reported stolen from out of Arizona.
I told him my car has never been out of the state, let alone to Arizona -- he re-verified some things, and then says it must be some mistake. As he was checking things in the computer, i was watching the screen and sure enough, next to my vin#, there is a "stolen" comment listed.
How does that happen? Was another white TL-S stolen in Arizone and they botched the VIN number when reporting it??
Also, what would have happened had I not shown up to my car like I did, would they have impounded the vehicle?
word.

wow, thats interesting and scary at the same time. I guess they could change a few numbers in the VIN when reporting.
Did they show the car registered to you or did the cop say ?

The same thing happened to me while driving my aunt's Chrysler Cirrus.
I'm coming home from the store and notice 2 cop cars tailing me. I thought nothing of it ' cause my aunt did everything strictly by the book so I knew the paperwork was alright. I stop at the next traffic light and 3 other cop cars box me in. With their guns drawn, they tell me to get out of the car. I'm scared shitless but do exactly what they say. I get out the car and get on the ground. They proceeded to get the registration and insurance papers out of the glovebox. After run everything through the computer they told me that the car kept comming back stolen. All the paerwork I had and my liscense was cool so after about 45 min., they finally let me go.
Dat wuz sum skairy shit.

Well, while I was waiting for the cop to run the info .. i was watching his LCD display on his 'puter .. and it reported me as the owner, and my license plate # as the correct number associated w/ my car.. but in big red letters, it stated that the vin number was associated w/ a stolen car.
The cop was very confused, and judging by my calm, yet curious demeanor, he had no reason to believe that I had stolen this car. Plus, why the hell would I be using this car as my primary vehicle if it was stolen and parking it outside my apt??
Funny story ... kinda weird.

I'm wondering the same thing. They don't just go around parking lots running license plate numbers and VIN's.
It would be understandable if a white TL-S was recently stolen in the area. But you said it was reported stolen out of Arizona and you are in Illinois. I don't think cops go that far for a stolen vehicle.

It's more common than you think.

Yeah we drive through parking lots at night and if we ever see just a car parked by itself or even if its not we still run the number. Its done out of boredom because they usually just woke up from sleeping under a tree all day.
