which is the most reliable car?

I heard that Toyota Camry is most reliable, always works.
I used to have 88 Camry, had on it 190K miles when I sold it, and it still worked fine and never had any major problems.

Maybe, maybe not.
You see if you saw the movie Sleeper, starring Woody Allen you cannot forget the reliability of the early VW bugs. After being propelled into the future by about 500 years, Woody happens across a "60" ish
VW in a remote cave. He climbs in and of course the bug starts right up. Anybody who was there will get the joke right away.
You could drive them off of embankments and they'd still keep right on going.

I disagree, there are certain models/brands of the cars which on average make 200K miles without any major problems. and on the other hand, there are cars which start having problems like at 50K with transsmissions and/or engines.
I personally do not like the design of Toyota Camry, do not like its acceleration.
But one thing is good, is the relaibility.

How do you prove that a '01 camry is going to be reliable? reliability is a hindsite...honda and toyota can make crap cars in '01 that break down in 2 years, but we would never know 'cuz it's not 2 years old yet.

so you can say that you could rely on an '88 camry for 10 years, but you can't say the same for a '98, 'cuz it's not 10 years old yet and the only thing you can go on is the history and guess which will be reliable, but it's a pretty hard guess.

and there's a difference between quality and reliability, so you can't base it on quality (vw has good quality, but their reliability sucks, and the same could be said for a lot of other makes)...it can be made of the cheapest materials, but if it lasts 20 years, isn't it reliable?

All I can tell you is I drove a Honda Accord (86) 4-Door for 208,500 miles. My Brother in Law has it now. Still going strong.

I've heard of Mercedes that have passed a million miles, but myself, I've had good luck with Nissans. My last Maxima's still strong at 180K+. Original clutch (and the one I learned to drive stick on) lasted 'till 168K. In my opinion, most foreign cars from the 90's and later should easily give you 200K plus w/o anything major going wrong. American cars, well, they still don't have my confidence. Seen too many fords fail under 50K.

I'd say 90% of all Honda's, Toyota's and Nissan's built in Japan are VERY reliable, if not perfect.

(Integra, Civic, Accord, Corolla, Camry, Sentra, Maxima, just to name a few.)

I've heard good things about the old vw bugs (like lasting 500k+ miles)...unfortunately, the new ones are POS's from the factory. My friend had a '00, the transmission went bad before 1000 miles.

To my surprise, my dad's '89 GMC van lasted around 250k. Numerous repairs, but cheap (until the repairs got a little too expensive and the engine finally died). Hmmmm, n/m, this doesn't really count as reliable, does it? :p Chevy's are cheap and repairable...just remember to say NO to the other two companies...

Yes, I agree that in order to make a decision about car's reliabily we would need to wait for 10 years or more.
But for 88 Toyota Camry, I tell you, they are like forever lasting cars.
I abused my 88 Camry so much, I never changed Transmission fluid, it was all black, I barely changed oil every 10K. Never done any repairs, except very minor things. And it worked like a Swiss watch at 190K miles when I sold it.
I am just amazed with reliabiliy of engine and transmission.

Would be nice to know that my 2001 CLS will last for 10 years just as easy as my Camry 88??

Yeah, that would be nice, but I doubt that's gonna happen My '97 Integra has a better chance for 10 years, and it's been through 2 near-totaled accidents. My CL is already falling apart, pre-10k miles!

As of '02, is the NSX the only Honda left built in Japan?

yes, maybe its the problem. Camry 88 was 100% build and made in Japan.
CLS has engine build in USA.

Probably same american ideots working on assembly line for Acura and Ford.

It's too difficult to say what car is the most reliable or which will last the longest cuz it all depends on how well the vehicle is taken care of. Most cars will last a very long time if given the proper care (i.e. changing the oil regularly, keeping up the belts, etc.). A car will also "live" longer if you don't drive them like you stole them. That being said, I think my CLS will die in 5 years max.

While I agree that proper maintance extends life time of the car, this is not necessarly true if you have some shity car like Ford.

As I said, I had a camry 88 with 190K miles which I abused like crazzy, never really did any maintance, change oil evey 10K miles, and never changed tranny fluid, it was black. I wonder how it was even working.

I'd have to stick with Toyota.....a friend of mine used to have an 83' Tercel rusted hatchback........whatever he did, he could not KILL the car...we slammed into snow banks, did jumps off ramps (THAT's right)... overrevved all gears and neutral drop it... the car just would not die!

Either that, or go with a lada

All due respect, but Sleeper is a movie and Woody is a movie maker. I have had several VWs, right from the beginning, (I'm 67) and the contemporary cars are mo' bettah. Bugs were consistent but the best thing about them was that they were easy to work on when they broke. Simple engines, simple designs, great for automotive dummies like me. I drove them from socal to Mexico many times to surf in the very early 60s and never had a problem even I could not fix. (Speaking of the car only, of course.)

i think this car will be reliable and last for 10+ years if driven normally (which probably excludes 80% of this board's members), even if the fit and finish & quality doesn't hold up. The people with major problems (ie drivetrain) are probably more rare than it appears considering this board is only a small and unfair representation of owners.

i'd rather have a reliable car with acceptable fit and finish/quality rather than an unreliable car with great fit and finish, and i think the same with most people, which explains the popularity of the camry and accord.

I easily expect 100,000 trouble free miles from my CL-S ... then I get my extended warranty money refunded
