Mis-diagnosed transmission problem

I managed to get about 60k miles on my 01 CL-S before the tranny started slipping a few weeks ago. I called the dealer and made an appointment to drop it off. He called a few hours later and said the tranny was fine, but the motor mounts were broken and THAT IS WHY it was dropping out of gear. He stated the motor mount problem is common on the "S" types due to the excessive torque. Long story short it cost my $400 to have two of them replaced. Later that night I was going up a hill and it happened again. Called the dealer back, dropped it off in the a.m. He called me later and said the tranny checked out fine, but the reason it was slipping was the tires were losing grip going up the hill. There is no rain here and the tires are < 6 months old. I called Bullsh*t on that. He said I could come up and we could take it for a test drive. Well luckily ( I guess) we were able to reproduce the problem. At that point he gladly took the car in for a transmission replacement. Now I want my $400 back for the original mis-diagnosis. I'm not doubting that the motor mounts were cracked, but I'm looking for some ammunition to tie that problem to the transmission going out so I can get my $$ back. I haven't talked to the dealer about it yet, he may say fine, but I want to be prepared in case he doesn't.

On a side note, I'm really disappointed in all of the problems with the car. I have the same type of issues as most of the others on this site. This is my second Acura, my first being a 96 Integra with a manual 5-speed. I loved that car and never had a problem. I thought I'd be an Acura owner for life, but right now I'm not so sure. The little lady wants and MDX. If they suffer from the same problems, I may have to seriously reconsider it.

Thanks

I think it would be hard to prove. The motor mounts might not have caused the mis-shifting, but they still could have been cracked.

On a side note, the problems with the CL are CL specific. They have nothing to do with the MDX.

if the mechanic told you it was the motormounts and not the transmission causing you problems, then maybe you have a case against getting your $400 back. if its a reputable dealer and you put up enough fuss, they should do it. did they take the car for a test drive the first time or just say it was fine, as their expert opinion? did you see the mounts, were they that bad? i don't think i've heard of a problem with them but i could be wrong. let us know what happens

go ahead and ask...it can not hurt... open calm communication is the key... I guess he can put the cracked ones back on the car and credit back your 400...

and I do not think the MDX is having any tranny issues that I know of...

Has the same exact tranny issues we have. A cousin had one and he went through 2 trannies before he gave it back. Plus, why else was it covered under the recall. I think the newer ones are fine though.

And hopefully you'll get the money back, but they could have needed to be replaced anyways so they may try and tell you that.

Lame post above. Most CLs didn't have a problem when new either.
I'd say over $70,000 in car debt/depreciation is a problem!
Oooh an 04 RL! pinch me!

I paid 35.5 for the RL brand spanking new, it worth bluebook last time I looked with 5,400 miles 36.5, I make money ! My 05 MDX which I paid 41.5 is worth 41.5 with it current mleage of 2,900 miles, I break even ! So what is all you speculation about depreciation on MY cars in debt 70K ????????????????????????????

he wasn't qustioning your integrity, or saying anything about the values of your current cars, but now I'm starting to question your reading comprehension skills.

he was saying how the CL depreciates in value like a mofo since it's now not only having shitty trannies, but also is discontinued.

Thanks for the thoughtful replies. I see the thread has shifted way off course. Hopefully my car will be ready in a few days. I'll update the thread at that point.

At a minimum, I would ask them to eat the labor for the motor mounts. Start by asking for the whole $400 but "settle" for the labor. That whole thing about the tires slipping shows how little they seem to know. That was a BS diagnosis. I defy them to get any CL-S, even with bald tires, to spin the wheels once it is rolling, even up hill. Please.

I had 60K on my 2001 CL-S and noticed that my car was pulling to the right when I hit the brakes. I had no problems with the replaced trans. The dealer diagnosed the pulling problem as broken motor and tran mounts. ACURA paid the bill. I suggest you contact ACURA Customer Service or get the dealer to contact your regional rep. My

It's worth a shot. When I took mine in for the tranny, they first told me it was the alternator, not the tranny. I called BS, asked them to check and re-check it. It turned out to be the tranny. They not only replaced the tranny, but the motor mounts and tranny mounts at the same time. They said the same think about the torque. Charging you $400 for something that didn't fix the problem is crap, but it is also common.
As for tires slipping while going downhill, I don't buy that. You're going to know if you're tires are slipping. The big sign is if it starts slipping into a lower gear on flats. That happened to me. Dropping to second gear at 60 mph ain't fun.
Good luck, keep us posted.
