Minor Hit & Run - Repair Advice

Hey all:

Some idiot ran into my rear bumper while parked on the street resulting in two 3-inch-long, horizontal gashes. The paint has been scraped right off and the black plastic of the bumper is visible. =[

Should I take my car in to a body shop and have them sand the damaged paint down and touch it up or should I just put touch-up paint on it myself?

Cost isn't too much of an issue here - I just want to make sure that in the long term, the Satin Silver paint doesn't start peeling and flaking off from the damaged area.

What is the best alternative for a durable paint repair? Thanks...

Regards.

I don't think the damage is more than the $200 deductible so I would rather repair it myself. Thus, it's probably more efficient for me to bypass the insurance company.

Besides, ICBC, our public insurer treats everyone like a criminal. I remember the last time I had a hit-and-run claim, the adjuster kept on urging me to admit that I had actually damaged my own car. This interrogation went on for 20 freakin' minutes! He gave me all the shit about how people try to scam the insurance company, etc. for free repairs... The cops that work out of the claim centres are just as bad.

Then there's all of the excess paperwork that need to be done e.g. if the adjuster feels like it, he/she will make you get them a notorized statement [it costs like $25 let alone the time to drive out to meet with a notary/lawyer].

yeah i had something similar happen to me .. in chicago, in the left turn lane behind a delivery mini van. The guy has pulled out into the center of the intersection yeilding to oncoming traffic. When the light turns orange he starts reversing without looking. I start honking, but by the time he stops, the fucking van was riding my baby!

this was downtown chicago .. and since we couldnt sit and block traffic while we waited for a cop, we decided to pull into the alley ahead. so my girlfriend (ex now) and I, stepped out and pushed down the front of the car and he pulled ahead .. his ass was so high that he cleared it no problem.

anyways, looking at the damage on the front (sounds identical to yours!) i kinda figured the headache waiting for a cop, filing a report, following up the claim, was not worth it .. this looked like a 2-300 dollar hit that I'd end up paying as deductible anyways!

You're gonna need to refinish that back bumper.... take it to a bodyshop... there' s no way to do it with touch up.

Try the dealer first. I had something like that happen and they got me a new bumper. THey said there was a recall on bumpers if they got chipped. They have bad paint.

Yes it can be touched up. We have a local service that sands airbrushes and blends.

I had a dime sized flake on the front bumper. You now cannot tell it is there at all. Even under bright lighting with a magnifying glass...
