Mercedes quality slipping - per WSJ
Wall St. Journal article on MSNBC.com -- just thought some folks might be interested. Not meaning to take a shot at these otherwise fine cars. But not a great development given lack of success of Daimler-Chrysler marriage.

The report, conducted for the auto makers themselves, showed Mercedes quality and customer satisfaction falling since 1999 to levels below Opel, the German unit of General Motors Corp. and a brand with one of the worst images in Europe.
The J.D. Power study, which surveyed some 156,000 car owners, found that five-year-old Mercedes vehicles had 296 problems per 100 vehicles, compared with an average of 285 for autos of the same age by other luxury makers and an overall industry average of 382.
“Being Mercedes, quality is absolutely the highest priority,” Boland said. “It’s what our brand is based on. We will use every resource at our disposal to bring those numbers up.”
i think they are great cars, but have lots of "toys" in them, i had a s500 stop by today, we have to pick it up tomorow for repairs, the owner showed me that he has no audio, probably a damn pse module, seen this before, the cars are highly advanced and they run on a software system, (child state of windows i guess) anyway some phanton problems dissapear with restarts, but i mean look at the keys, do you think the keys have to be like that, just opening the doors with the remote triggers modules, network communicatins, bus lines, you should see what has to happen just to unlock a door - they should either get back to basics, or just concentrate real hard on issues at hand. i still like them though, despite any issues they are an awsome car

They are full of gadgets and gizmos - way too much, IMHO - it takes away fromthe driving.
I might add as well, Mercedes is trying to go down market with some of their models, and pick up some of the high $20-low $30k consumers. You just can't pack all of the features into a $30,000 car that you need to compete in the market segment and still get S-class quality. IMO
